D&D 5E Guidelines for magic items for high level characters?

I cannot remember now if this is in one of the books or just a quote from one of the designers, but basically, as 5th Ed is written, a character should acquire one permanent magic item for about every five or five character levels, with the first showing up around 4th or 5th level. Note that this is magic item in general, not a weapon or armor or something else that is specifically for combat. It is entirely possible to make it to 20th level and all your magic items to be non-combat items and for your character to survive just fine. Now, some of that survival may come from consumable magic items, the number of which are gotten is more flexible.

Just to have fun with it, I would role randomly for the whole party (only keeping two consumables per player, assuming they consumed the rest in their adventures to get to that level), then do a player lottery, or let them establish loot sharing rules as a group and reveal the loot. You can reveal it either all at once for the fun of it, or reveal it in the order they would have likely received it as they leveled up, and allow them to select how the loot is divided among them. This could be a fun session in and of itself.
