Gun-Fu feat (dungeon98/poly 157) - How does it work?

So this issue of poly featured an article by Rodney 'moridin' Thompson called 'The Kage', about some modern ninjas. In it, there's a feat called 'gun-fu'

I won't repreint the whole feat, but the benefit is as follows:

'when making an attack using only hand guns, you may make a single tumble check as a free action'

Now, a tumble check in combat is a free action that you make as part of a move:

A character can attempt to tumble as a free action that must be performed as part of a move action.

So what does this feat actually do?

It seems like it was intended to let the character make an extra tumbling move as a free action. Kind of a poor man's spring attack or shot-on-the-run. That's what we treated it as.

The feat, as printed, is actually in error. The errata'd version is as follows:

Gun-Fu
You have meshed martial arts with gunplay and can perform amazing stunts of dueling with firearms.
Prerequisites: Combat Martial Arts, Dodge, Personal Firearms Profiency, Mobility, Shot on the Run, Tumble 4+.
Benefits: In any round in which you make an attack using only handguns, you may make a single Tumble check (DC 20) as a free action to gain an additional 15 feet of movement this round. You may not take a free 5-foot step this round, nor may your movement from this feat exceed your movement rate with a normal move action.
Special:This feat may be taken by the Gunslinger advanced class as a bonus feat.

The errata'd version was supposed to appear in a later issue of Polyhedron, but I think we all know what happened to that.

Thanks a heap Moridin, that makes much more sense.

Explain this line to me... basically this is in there to make sure that anyone with a base move of less than 15' can't move more than their base move in that round right?

So my gunslinger can move 30', shoot and then (presuming he makes the tumble check), move and extra 15'?

Any ideas on a gun kata feat? Like from equilibrium...

Basically, it means that if your movement rate for some reason is less than 15 ft. per round, then you may not use this feat to move any further than your base movement. So, if your base move is 30, you can move 30, shoot, then use this feat to move an additional 15. If your base move is 10 (if you're wearing really bulky armor, for example) then you can move 10, shoot, then use this feat to move an additional 10. Capiche?

Makes sense. There isn't any text in there about avoiding AoO's like with spring attack but I guess if you are shooting, then there's not a whole lot of reason to be adjacent anyway. To summarize though, this is basically Shot on the Run with a 15ft movement bonus if you make a Tumble(20) check.

Gun kata, eh?

One possible application of a Gun Kata would be the ability to use a ranged weapon in melee without incurring an AoO. Definitely look into "Blood and Fists" to get some good ideas, while I might do so myself and see what I can find. Other abilities/feats that would be beneficial would be Two-Weapon Fighting (and you could say you effectively fight with it if you know the art, similar to Kobujutsu), Blindsight, and any number of shooting feats you can think of.

Hmm...

There are rules under Tumble for AoOs for rolling around opponents, so I woudl assume it would fall under that.
