D&D (2024) Gunslinger Class (from Valda's Spire of Secrets) on DnD Beyond!

I contend that the best trick shooter in 5e is the BM Figter, the best snipers are rogues or (especially Hunter) rangers, and the best magitech gunsmith is the artificer.

Matt Mercer’s Gunslinger is just not as good as the Battlemaster at what it tries to do.
I agree, all I'm doing is coming up with some unique BM maneuvers for guns, and calling it good.

Yep, especially the 2024 BM, no reason to look elsewhere tbh.

I am gonna make a Percy style PC soon, and I’m torn between full tech using BM and magitech using either Artillerist or Battlesmith artificer. (By Percy style I just mean she will have a pistol and a big long rifle)

do the new artillerist with true strike on your gun. over the battle smith if you want a magitech character the spell list is just better thematically and mechanically. The BM is better if you want all the cool trick shots and fits Percy theme better

Yeah I like the Battlesmith purely for the fact it actually uses a weapon, whereas the Artillerist just uses wands and stuff and casts spells. Both have great options especially combined with mark of making human.

Battlemaster is also very cool though and the tech stuff can be done with skills and tool proficiencies.

Let's remember even when guns need reload, these can be done by a sidekick or squirrel. If there are firearms, then these can be also used by enemy nPCs.

If firearms can get stucks, then this can be possible with low-level magic. Somebody could ask to use fireams from XIX/d20 Past, and later weapons and gadgets from Call of Duty Advanced Warfare.

Don't lie to me. I'm sure you're imagining your games with your gunslinger PC like this.

In the play test version of the artillerist you can use your gun as your focus instead of a wand, and since they added true strike you can use that with their lvl 5 feature getting the bonus d8 on top of the weapon attack. + Int +1d6 from your true strike.

The problem with Battlaster is that unless your gm allows older fears or allows you to rebuild the crossbow expert feat then you have a hard time being able to reload for multiple attacks. If they allow the crossbow expert feat to be refluffed for guns then you could dual wild pistols or use a rifle depending on your needs

I don’t see that in the UA. Am I just blind?
I am reading the article and I see where you can use tools as a focus, and then in the Artillerist I see being able to use your arcane firearm as a focus, but the arcane firearm is a wand rod or stave.

Well the gunner feat is from Tasha’s or Xanathar’s, so still completely legal. But yeah tbh I often just use crossbows as guns in D&D.

Anyway, what I’ve kinda poked around and figured out is that the Artillerist does more damage while the Battlesmith has much better range. If the Artillerist can use a gun as their arcane firearm, then it just wins on every level.

If not, I may request to be able to make a staff that doubles the range of spells with attack rolls. With spell sniper, that would make a spell with 120ft range into 360ft range, which is still less that the long range on most two handed ranged weapons, but is also still way more than you ever normally need. Maybe spend a charge to like quadruple the range (720ft) until the end of your turn instead idk.
