So the Euro Cup is on at the moment, and through some absolute FREAK of chance, Switzerland qualified for the tournement (and then proceeded to score one measly goal in 3 matches while finishing last in their pool).

What's interesting about the Swiss team (honestly, this is the only thing that's interesting about the Swiss team) is that they have a central midfielder whose surname rings a bell with RP gamers.

Gygax.

Neat, huh?

Now, with teams issuing media guides before every season and major tournement, pronunciation of foreign names by commentators is much better than it once was and so I generally trust the pronunciation I hear on tv.

And I suspect I have been as wrong about the pronunciation of 'Gygax' as some other members have been about the pronunciation of 'Drow' and even 'ENWorld'.

However. Commentators can still get it wrong, as can media guides, and so even can Swiss midfielders, so I decided that I wouldn't know how to truly pronounce the surname of the esteemed EGG until I polled ENWorld.

So in true democratic fashion, let's put it to the vote; let's make it official - how exactly is Gygax pronounced?

I'll leave it to one of the moderators to email Gary with the news - I bet he'll be glad to have it cleared up.)

Just for the record, I always pronounced it "Guy-gax," which was confirmed recently when he did a voice-over cameo appearance on Fox's cancelled Futurama.

Yeah, I always pronounced it 'Guy-gax' but the football (sorry, soccer) commentators said Gee-gax.

It actually makes sense since every other language that uses the same alphabet as us pronounces 'y' more like 'ee' than 'igh/uy/ai'.

As for your so-called 'confirmation', I remind you that EGG is a member here and as such only gets one vote, same as the rest of us (unless he's got a ton of alts).

I used to play igh-uy-ai, but then I realised I could spend my money in far better ways.

The problem is location, while at one time it may have been pronounced a certain way it now has become an Americian name. The problem with Americian english is that we have taken names and words from other lands and built them into our vocabulary, adjusting them to fit.

I notice that too on tv. We were very happy to learn that Gary has a relative (perhaps remotely) that is a world class soccer player. (World class? -At least he gets to play with the very best.)

On Swedish telly they pronounced the name GYH-gaxx.

Gary actually addressed this in one of his EN World Q&A threads, so if there's someone who has more time on their hands than I do, feel free to look it up. :)

Apparently the pronunciation *does* vary by location and Gary touches on this in his comments.
