On the new the other day, they were saying that Cardinal Ratzinger didn't even want to be Pope...

Anyone know why he's Benedict now?

And I'm going to kill this thread by mentioning that he was also a member of the Hitler Youth for a brief time while growing up. :\

Forced into (like anyone had a choice) and later deserted going home. When the americans came through his village he was put into a POW camp.

I think the thread, more importantly, covers a major world-wide current event. It's not political in that we're discussing political issues. Just because it's about a political office doesn't mean anything; no issues are being discussed. Similarly, religious issues aren't being discussed. Merely a religious position.

We've always been able to discuss current events, though.

Threads like this are the reason I'm glad I don't have the task of being a moderator. Folks, please be courteous to each other for however much longer this thread lasts - which isn't long I'm guessing. The reason is this - when Pope John Paul II died, that had a profound emotional impact on many of the members here. So the mods gave you all the opportunity to mourn and console each other, laxing up on the policy a bit to allow for that. However, there is no emotional need of any type to discuss this here.

Politics and religion discussions have a nasty tendancy to get nasty quick. That's just the nature of the beast. The point of the rule is to avoid nastiness. If this topic can continue without such nastiness, it might continue. Or it might not. It's the decision of the moderators and one I hope you all will respect once it is made. And it's a tough decision which thankfully I don't have to make :)

So I'll be reporting the thread to the mods and we'll see what they decide. In the meantime, please be civil.

Well, I suppose if you don't like Benedict, the good news is that he's only got 3 years before he's out, then we get Peter (the first Pope Peter since the first Pope, Peter), followed by the destructioni of Rome and the beginning of the Apocalypse.
