Hackmaster!

Okay, now I know a large percentage of EN's readers will be a fan of Knights of the Dinner Table, personally, I can't sing it's praises high enough, it's an amazing comic.

I've had a brief flick through the Hackmaster books, as in the actual gaming handbooks for the 2nd ed spin-off they (Kenzer) produced, and I always thought that being such a big fan of the comic it'd be an awesome time playing it... the manuals however are DAUNTINGLY large.

Basically, I was just wondering if anyone here has played hackmaster or even read the books in detail, whether it's worth playing, and most importantly, whether it's worth all the cash my local store wants for the set of books! :\

Hoody-Hoo!

Well, you could visit the kenzerco boards and ask there. :)

Simply put, there are people who love the game and there are people who hate the game. Hackmaster, as written, is playable and fun, although I personally find it too complex and "1E/2E" for my liking.

Cheers!

I perused the Gawds & Demigawds book and was left almost speechless. It had the pantheons from almost every established D&D world in there (Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Fading (aka Forgotten) Realms, etc). How awesome is that???

I have one of the modules and one of the hacklopedias.

You can read my review of the module in the reviews section under my name.

It has neat stuff, is easy to be compatible with Basic/1e/2e D&D, a cool kill em and take the loot philosphy and a lot of humor. Unfortunately it also has a lot of bathroom humor, DM versus PC mentality as written, and some stuff just designed to be gross and make PCs uncomfortable.

First off, I have say that the Kenzer people are some damn nice guys. A friend and I were talking about Hackmaster with one of them at Origins and after about thirty minutes of telling us about it he gave each of us a copy of the Players Handbook for Hackmaster. I've read the book and it really looks well put together and a lot of fun.

Hackmaster sounds very intriguing.

I wonder what Gary says about Hackmaster?

Is there a Greyhack coming out? Is it a Gary-version Greyhack or a TSR-version Greyhack?

Has the Mystarahack come out yet? What's that like?

I've played Hackmaster.

It was delightful and deadly.

The rules for addiction were fantastic.

As were the legalities of the game. We once spent an entire session hammering out a loophole in the looting section of our adventure charter.

Might not be your cup of tea, and I'm certain you could avoid it, but for me it was the awesomest thing ever.

HackMaster is the be-all-end-all of fantasy, sword-and-sorcery RPGs. If you like to Game Master with the feeling that you are actually the game's MASTER, look no further. Nothing is free in HackMaster, everything has to be earned. What a refreshing thought.
