Half-Dwarves

Heres a little something I whiped up...there are half elves so why shouldn't there be half dwarves?

point out things that should be changed...or that make the game unbalenced.

The Half-Dwarf:

Personality: The personality of a Half-Dwarf is much similar to that of a Dwarf. They are not quite as suspicious of strangers, yet they have a much better sense of humor.

Physical Description: Half-Dwarves stand about 4 feet tall, and are much like a larger version of a Dwarf. Half-Dwarves are considered an adult at the age of 35, and live to be about 250 years old. Half-dwarf males value their beard just as dwarfs, but spend less time fussing about it.

Alignment: Half-Dwarves tend to be a lawful alignment, but there is no tendency towards god over evil, but neutrality is common.

Religion: Half-Dwarves tend to worship Wee Jas.

Languages: Half-Dwarves speak Dwarven and common. In addition, they tend to learn a variety of languages.

Names: A Half-Dwarf’s name has almost a sacred meaning, they usually have 2 names one from the Dwarven parent and one for the human.

Half-Dwarven Racial Traits:
- +1 Constitution, +1 Strength, -2 Charisma
- Medium sized
- Base speed is 25 feet
- Low-Light Vision
- +1 racial saving throw against poisons
- +2 dodge against any medium sized or larger creature
- +1 racial bonus to appraise relating to metal or stone
- +1 racial bonus to skill checks related to stone or metal
- 4 bonus skill points at 1st level
- Favored Class Cleric

Don't have odd stat bonuses/penalties. Everything else looks fine. Yes, even the strength. Think about it. Dwarves would be small if it weren't for their immense muscles. Says so in the description. So if you take a normal dwarf and make it bigger, I think it would be stronger than the average human.

Only 4 ft tall? A standard dwarf is 4 to 4 1/2 feet tall according to my PHB.

And I'm not sure why they would get low-light vision. Neither of their parents has it.

I think you should give them a standard speed. Probably 20 ft. you could say that they have longer torsos, but short, dwarvish legs. This is a fairly significant drawback, and could give you leeway in giving them traits like increased strength and con- perhaps lower dex as well as lower charisma. (If their larger size makes them stronger, it might make them clumsier too.)

imagine the original couple who gave origin to this race!!!
now, if it was a she-dwarf... with beard... huh!

1 - I would say that movement is either 20 or 30, since 20 is for small, 30 for medium...

2 - wouldn't give low light, darvision, genetic leftover.

3 - wouldn't give the dodge bonus...

4 - liked the idea, i am working with a friend toward the Mul from Darksun, remember it?? Well...

edit: changed letters to their right places...

Orcs have darkvision, and so do half orcs so darkvision for the Half-dwarves, but drop low-light

Make the stat bonuses even

ditch the dodge bonus

these guys don't have 4 or 5 decades to learn that like their dwarven parents besides it only applies to giants

Half Dwarf
- Medium sized
- Base Speed is 20 feet
- 1 extra "racial"* feat at first level
- Darkvision 60ft.
- +2 racial saving throw against Poisons
- +2 racial saving throw against Spells and Spell-like effects
- +1 racial bonus to Appraise checks related to rare or exotic materials
- +1 racial bonus to Craft checks relating to stone or metal
- Dwarven Blood
- Automatic Languages: Common and Dwarven
- Bonus Languages: Any (except special)
- Favored Class: Any

Half Elf
- Medium Sized
- Base Speed is 30 feet
- 1 extra "racial"* feat at first level
- Lowlight Vision 60ft
- Immunity to Sleep and +2 racial saving throw against Enchantment
- +1 racial bonus Listen, Search, and Spot
- Elven Blood
- Automatic Languages: Common and Elven
- Bonus Languages: Any (except special)
- Favored Class: Any

*- This feat must have some application to the character's persona and may not be anything combat or magic related. Good examples are Alertness, Skill Focus, or Endurance.

This is how I would make bastard races that people would actually play (no need to respond saying youve played a half-elf, youre definitely in the minority). They keep the full bonus for racial saving throw bonuses, full vision bonus, and half of their skill bonuses.

The dwarves lose the giant bonus and the attack bonuses, and stonecunning. The elves lose auto-secret door checks and their proficiency bonuses. They still get racial languages and their bonus languages are both "Any (except special)". Finally their favored class changes to "Any".

I gave them a feat at 1st level because of their human heritage (and because otherwise these are just watered down multi-classable races). IMO, balanced at ECL +0.

Technik

Edited: Changed 1 extra feat to 1 extra racial feat.

Not IMHO. Humans have 1 extra skill point per level, compared to your half-elf's low-light vision, skill bonuses, extra language and prestige class availability, and resistance to certain spells.

Why play a human?
