Half-Ogre Lasher, TWF, and other stories

Whip Lash is only related to AoOs. The Kraken Fighter gets AoOs within 100'. If it grabs a whip with a tentacle (if that's possible), it should still be able to make AoOs within 100'.

A human fighter with a whip can hit anyone out to 15'... but the Lasher can still only make AoOs within 5'. The range he has with his normal attacks is irrelevant.

A Kraken Lasher, by the wording of the ability, is limited to AoOs within 5' with a whip.

Of course, he's got two tentacles.

No Medium is what you want.

Range weapons are not like melee weapons.

A Whip can not effectivly be weilded 2 handed.

Its the same as takeing a light crossbow (small, 1d8)
and making it Large (Large, 2d8)

Reach is +5 per size increase so your 1/2 Ogre would have range of 20' with a Medium Whip.

Two things.

One, Half Ogres are Large creatures, and can wield Large weapons one-handed. Thus, a Large Whip is just fine.

Two: Whips do not have REACH, they have RANGE. Range is increased by 25% for each size increase of the base weapon.

So why doesn't the average Lasher use a Medium whip? It's not like it costs him an extra feat...?

Yup. Which in no way affects where a Lasher can make AoOs.

Query - where's that mechanic from? Does it specify "Range", or "Range Increment"?

Range Increment: 15ft*.

*Special Rule:

Although you keep it in hand, treat it as a ranged weapon with a maximum range of 15 feet and no range penalties.

Range Increment: 15ft*.

*Special Rule:

I didn't mean the Range of a whip (which is a Range and not a Range Increment as defined in the text of the weapon, and is thus ineligible for modification by Far Shot, for example) - I meant the mechanic of increasing Range for larger weapons.

If it increases Range Increment, then a Large whip still reaches 15 feet, just like a small one. If it's Range, then increasing the size changes the Range of the whip.

Um, maybe because prior to A&Eq and SavS, there were no reasonable, defined, balanced rules for increasing a weapon's size? (the DMG little mini-table was at best a quick dip at the trot, and really didn't work that well anyway, IMO.)

Never said it did. I was responding to someone's comment on "+5' reach per size increase", which obviously doesn't apply to a Whip.

Savage Species, page 42. I don't own A&Eq yet. And it says both "range increment" and "range":

Size and Range: As ranged weapons change size, their range increment also changes. For each increase in size, the range goes up by 25%.

The passage only includes the example of a Huge Longbow (RI: 125') versus a normal Large Longbow (RI: 100').

Regardless, the passage mentions BOTH range increments AND absolute range. Thus, it applies to both.

Which, IMO, is only logical; a bigger whip SHOULD be able to hit targets further away.

I also think the small whip in the PHB is grossly overblown in terms of range, but ... *shrug* ... IMO, a whip should have a range of 10', which is increased by 5' per size category increase. But that'd be House Rule Country, so ...
