Dwarf + Orc = Dork? (sory, could not help myself)

-------------------------

"Does a half-elf only exist from a human-elf mating? "

Half-elf + half-elf will also produce a half-elf.

Did not see it in the PH, may be from 2e, but I was under the impression that:
Half-elf + elf = half-elf and half-elf + human = human.

It depends on the campaign, really.

In core D&D, you may say that "human genes" are recessive (not sure if that's the real proper term in english, my genetic courses havn't been in english), while elf or orc ones are dominants.

Hence the "elf blood" and "orc blood" properties.

In 2e Realms, they said somewhere that
half-elf + human = human
half-elf + half-elf = half-elf
half-elf + elf = half-elf

But I find more logical to have
half-elf + human = human
half-elf + half-elf = half-elf
half-elf + elf = elf

YMMV. The simplest way to solve the problem would of course be:
elf + human = nothing, sterile union
orc + human = nothing, sterile union

But you would lose some classical archetypes of fantasy.

Hmm... I could see that. I tend to go with:

human + half-elf = 75% of offspring being human, 25% half-elf
half-elf + half-elf = 25% human, 25% elf, 50% half-elf
elf + half-elf = 75% elf, 25% half-elf

Same thing with half-orcs and orcs, just replace "elf" with "orc" above.
