Halfling PC behaving like Kender

IMHO, as long as everyone has fun, anything goes. If the players are ok with a thieving "kender", if they have fun then by all means, enjoy it. If the players don't like to have a kleptomaniac in the party, then the player of said halfling should change his PC's behaviour, or switch PC.

Doesn't matter whether theft is wrong, or less wrong than mutilation - it is a game. All that counts is whether or not the people involved have fun.

Judging from the info we have, people are not having fun.

Heya:

well Duh, injury and agression is worse than theft

The halfling believes it's okay to steal from groupmates (it's a foible). Would it be okay if the dwarf had as a foible "Believes that theft is worse than injury and aggression."?

Maybe it is a cultural thing. In my culture, property rights are way important. You can get beat up for scratching somebody's car. ;)

[Edit: Hey, any chance we can find out if the other players knew what type of halfling the halfling's player was planning on playing beforehand? Or was it a surprise?]

Take care,

I run a game where I had a halfling rogue PC that stole from any NPC that wasn't looking. The group was in a bazaar, just having fought off an outsider and the Guard was out in force to clean up and keep the place secure. So he sets about stealing stuff. He had joined the game not too long before this. He got seen and pursued and ended up getting the group cornered. One of the other PCs stuck with him "because he's a fellow PC"... He left the group soon after, because that PC was not a viable choice to use in the city they were in.

The pick pockets skill is useful for somethings, but you don't get a lot of money for it. Eventually they're gonna notice you stealing as well, and it can ruin the plans of everybody in the group. Running such a character that doesn't care what else happens so long as he gets a couple coins is not helpful for a campaign.

I as a player would have a word with him, IC and OOC. If he still kept up with it, I'd at the least not be in the same group with him. (PC wise)

It was a complete surprise.

But I should update everyone on this. Said player contacted me and said that he was going to tone his character down and would not steal from party members any more. He has come up with all sorts of plans for how the character can grow and change into something actually likeable. So it's all good.

I'd be perfectly fine with the halfling in my party, so long as he understood that my big fighter would beat the snot out of him every time he stole my stuff.
