D&D 5E Halloween Game: War of the Worlds comes to the Forgotten Realms

Well, it is getting close to Halloween and I have been asked to DM a 10 to 15 session game of 5E. Thinking about running a War of the Worlds game and laying waste to the Forgotten Realms.

What race/monster would be good as the invaders - thinking Mind-flayers.

As the book, the game will take place in two parts, the invasion and then life with the Martians in charge.

  • Part 1
  • The Landing - players are selected to visit the crater
  • The Opening - the War Machines come forth
  • The Victory of Mars - battles and more battles, the players moving from one location to another

    Part 2
  • Life in the ruins - this is where you have the land being converted to more habitual world
  • The Defeat of Mars - same as the book

Death of characters will take place with replacements being other survivalist.

Beholders was going to be my suggestion. In spelljammer they went about in massive ships that let them join their eyebeams into horrible ship-killing weapons.

The worst part of that would be the laying to waste of the surfce world would be incidental to the beholders actual plan to commit genocide upon the beholders of the realms as part of their on going internal race-war.

So phase 3 would not be as the book, they would just pack up and leave, with the final insult being that they were never interested in the surface races to begin with, they were at best an obstacle to their true aims. But not a significant one. :p

I'd go with the big reveal. Give them construct war-machines, and death rays, the whole deal, make the machines powerful enough that at low levels it's more about evading them than defeating them, and volatile enough that if they do bring one down there's nothing left inside but scorched slime and the occasional burnt tentacle-tip, until finally they manage to capture one intact and find...

Githyanki. This scenario is exactly how they do things. Dragon Magazine 309 even details how the Githyanki would do their invasion and vehicles, and tech they use to do so.
