handful of question

so i ran into some snags today and was looking to clarify some things.

so, first, reach, is someone infront of me considered 5 feet away? this question comes up for a few reasons, this particular time was over obscuring mist. is someone infront of me considered 5 feet away (20% concealment)? and is someone with one square between us 10 feet away (50% concealment)?

Rules Compendium (since it has better pictures in an easier to find location) pg 18

Threatened squares
If you're considered armed, you threaten all squares into which you can make a melee attack, even when it isn't you turn. That usually means everything in all squares adjacent to your space, including diagonally.

Reach
Most creatures of Medium or smaller size have a reach of only 5 feet. This means that they can make melee attacks only against creatures up to 5 feet (1 square) away.

So any square adjacent to the one the PC is in is considered "5 feet away" - the next square is 10 ft and so on.

This is where mats come in handy to visualize such things.

i use maps myself, but to me, a square infront of you wouldnt be considered 5 feet away, unless its for weapon mesurement. it just seems odd. i mean obscuring mist making you miss someone right infront of your face? I think that for weapons you can reach up to 5 feet, which is the opposite end of the 5 foot square then what your facing, and that would be where 5 foot ends. but for spell measurement it wouldnt start hiding until the end of the 5 foot square. i dont have rules compendium, so quoting it doesnt help.

PHB pg 138 has an illustration of being in a threatened square (the one adjacent to the square the "attacker"occupies).

pg 145 has an illustration of making a 5 ft step (from onwe square to the one adjacent to it).

D&D combat is very abstract and distance measurement is consistent.

Remember it is "magic" and not merely a simple "mist" - gain it is an abstract concept and trying to insert too much common sense and reality logic removes the wonder of the game as well as breaking its internal continuity.

neither of those things help me. i know about 5 foot step and threatening. but the mist still escapes me. magic or not, being able to miss somthing right infront of your face just doesn't make sence, to me, 5 feet ends at the END of the square. this makes since as most everyone has a 5 foot reach, this reaching the other end of the square.

T'hat's because you've never seen magical mist:p

Don't see where is the problem, with the reach or with the magic?

You can miss the bowl in the wc without mist and nearer than 5' away No?

You can read first square around you is reach 1, second away is reach 2 and so on erasing real distance in the concept.

You can ask for advice. You can be rude. You can't do both.

well regardless of the fact i disagree with that (it depends on what people are saying at the time) i don't believe i was being rude, i am mearly trying to explain my logic so it can either be understood, or proven wrong. but the examples given were no good to me, and i said so. i am sorry it came across rude.

might i also ask that you save comments for me, for my inbox, not my questions

ah this is helpful!! alright if this is how i read it, reach 1 and reach 2 etc etc, at what reach would the mist make a 20% miss chance? 1 or 2?
