Happy Presidents Day

I celebrated President's Day by finally caving in and buying World of Warcraft :)

I'm a state employee, so we get the following holidays:

New Years Day
Robert E. Lee's Birthday/Martin Luther King Jr. Day
George Washington/Thomas Jefferson
Mardi Gras Day (Only in Mobile and Baldwin counties; everyone else gets a floating 'Personal Day')
Confederate Memorial Day
National Memorial Day
Jefferson Davis' Birthday
Independence Day
Labor Day
Columbus Day/American Indian Heritage Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving
Christmas Day

And Texas, I think, still gets like two more holidays than we do, though they have a whole host of 'elective' holidays where you chose one out of two or three offered.
Wayne, are they hiring down there? You get over double the holidays that I get.

One of the side effects of my employer acquiring another company last year was that we get two more paid holidays now. Today's one of them.

Who do you work for Dave? Because that sounds eerily familiar.

Stratagene (a mid-sized life science supply company based near San Diego, CA; manufacturing is near Austin, TX and the company we bought is in Orange County, CA).

While monday may not have been the most monumental of holidays for those of on a federal government holiday schedule we don't mind. For most of us within the federal district we follow thier guidlines even if we have no direct corporate link to the US Governement.
And hey they need something between MLK Jr (Jan) and Memorial Day (May).

We could discuss the relative merits of Lincoln and Washington.

Which one would win in a fight?

They were both soldiers, so that's a wash. But Lincoln was taller so he's got a reach advantage. I'm going to go with Lincoln in a short, bloody melee.

Plus, there are two 'honorable holidays'; we always get the Friday after Thanksgiving and, on the years when it doesn't fall on a weekend, an extra day before or after Christmas. Those require the Governor's signature, but he's never failed to give them.

Sure, the state is almost always hiring unless the Governor decides it's not. http://www.personnel.state.al.us/JobAppInfo.htm has the relevant information. The Pay Grade is listed on the site as well, so you know what you'd start at and where you'll top out.

For instance, and most applicable to many people on the forums:

PROGRAMMER ANALYST SENIOR

A four-year college degree with a minimum of five (5) courses related to Information Technology (IT), two (2) of which must be programming courses.

Six (6) years of experience in computer programming utilizing high level languages to manipulate databases or files and produce outputs and reports, including three years of experience in system analysis, defining system requirements, writing system specifications, and designing computer systems.

NOTE:
College credit above the minimum may be substituted for the required general computer programming experience on a year-for-year basis (e.g., one year of education equals one year of experience) but NOT for the specialized analysis and design experience.

Additional experience above the minimum may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis (e.g., one year of experience equals one year of education).

In other words, you don't even need a college education if you've been doing the work for 10 years.

Salary range for that is: $53,744.60 - $81,998.80 Cost of living here is not all that high. I bought a 2020-sqft home in a really nice neighborhood for $110,000.00 four years ago. Prices have jumped somewhat since then due to the tremendous population expansion caused by the Hundai plant building up in our back yard, but not as much as you might think. Look at the Montgomery listings at Realtor.com. If you want neighborhood advice, email me.

Yeah, but he was skinny and underfed. George had the advantage of weight.

Although supposedly he had wooden teeth. If it's a dirty fight, I'd give the edge to Lincoln there again.
