I too was pretty hardcore in my NERO day's. Working night shifts at the time, I would knock off of work at 8:00 am friday, shower (maybe) and collect friends, drive to the site, and if we were early enough help set up. Then NPC (play as monsters) all weekend, not sleeping mind you, drive home sunday afternoon, and work from 11:00 sunday to 8:00am monday.
It was the Wildlands South (WLS) campaign, which was affiliated with the NERO Atlanta chapter. It was an off-shoot of the Harkenwood campaign from somewhere up north. It was set-up as a 5-year campaign and kind of fizzled in year 4 due to some leadership issues. It only had 4 events per year and was much lower power than a standard NERO campaign due to restrictions on buying "blankets" and builds. I played steadily for 3 years (about 10 sessions total, IIRC) and ended up at 5th or 6th level. It was far more enjoyable, IMO, than the regular Tyrangel campaign. Much smaller player base (~ 75 or so), but we had a PC:NPC ratio of about 2:1, so we had great events.
The events were all held at state parks around Atlanta and our "team" - a group of friends from the Charlotte, NC area - used to caravan down on Friday afternoons (about 5 to 5.5 hours), play to the wee hours of Saturday AM (usually around 4 - 5 AM), be up at 9 AM to cook the "House Argellan" breakfast for the camp, run all day Saturday and late into the night (usually around 3 - 4 AM), be up on Sunday for the "big" Sunday battle and then pile in the car around 12 noon to drive back. Add to that the fact that most of us are a bit more "seasoned" (I was the oldest at 39, the balance were in their early 30s). Needless to say, we were some tired puppies by the end of the weekend!
It was a ton of fun...but I am now officially retired...even though another Wildlands chapter is opening up in KY for play this year!
