I'm having trouble figuring out the rule as to how hardness, saving throws, and energy resistance are applied, or more specifically, what order they are applied in.
Now we have two definitely. PH.165 states that halving/quartering of damage to inanimate objects is applied before hardness. The other, in the FAQ, states that saving throws are applied before hardness as well. What isn't answered anywhere I can find, however, is whether saving throws, hardness, or halving/quartering of damage to inanimate objects are applied before or after energy resistance.
Basically, we knows a stone wall takes (X/4)-8 damage from cone of cold and that a +1 longsword that saves against a critical fumble from its owner will take (X/2)-12 damage from fireball. What I can't figure out is where energy resistance is taken out. I assume is comes out last because it appears as though all halving and such takes place before subtraction, but it's not actually stated anywhere I can find.
