Yep, 3rd edition has plenty of failings as well, but I still think clarity and simplicity is the goal to shoot for. Obviously, it's a lot easier said than done, but then again that's why a big reason game designers have jobs. As for Gygax, I think a lot of the praise heaped upon him is for introducing the game in the first place, as well as praise for good old nostalgia's sake. I think there have been better designers since then.
However, I tip my cap to him for writing Against the Giants...it's still a damn fun module!
