Rasyr, is Cyradon out now? What can you tell me about it? As they say, I've read your pamphlet, and am interested in signing up for your newsletter.
No, Cyradon is not out yet, but will be coming out early next year sometime (can be more exact as we get closer).

In other words, the little blurb was interesting, but didn't really have much to do with the fiction that Gavin wrote (which was really, really good, btw). I wondered if you could share more on what the world was like.

Gavin is an excellent writer. However, a few months ago, he left the project, and it was only about half way done. Since then Heike and I have been working on it ourselves, trying to get it finished. A little over a month and a half ago, ICE selected several forum members, along with a few others to give us a hand weeding out any inconsistencies and problem areas that we might not catch (being so familiar with the material).

Here is a blurb I wrote and have posted in other locations. It tells a lot about the history/background of the setting in a general sort of way.

*******************************

It will be!! Unlike many settings on the market, Cyradon actually provides a reason to go adventuring.

Short synopsis for those who don't know about Cyradon ---

Long ago, a race called the Cyards created a magical portal system called the Royal Roads. The portals took people great distances across the world in a very short time. Then the Cyrads disappeared.

Later on, the Elves moved to the land called Cyradon (home of the Cyrads), and moved in.

Sometime after that, Human mages from Anias (the largest continent) discover the Royal Roads and move to Belynar (city located on and in the sides of an extinct volcano in the middle of Cyradon). The elves welcome them.

500 years ago, some elves wanted the mages to give them wings so that they could fly like the Gryphons (who are one of the PC races in Cyradon) and the mages agreed. However, another group of elves didn't like this and ended up disrupting the ritual, causing the Devastation (basically killing the center of the small continent and almost everybody in that area). There were a number of survivors... Creatures mutated into monsters, and the Elves partaking in the ritual were changed. they got wings, although only vestigial ones, and they were scarred and twisted both in mind and body, with their longevity stripped from them as well. These are the Schirae, and they live in the mountains surrounding the Devastation. They are savage and cannibalistic, and that is their nice side....

Since then the Royal Roads have been closed.... at least until recently when they "fluctuated" - which the Dwarves detected....

In Anias, empires rose and fell, and Tarahir, once the heart of a great empire is now a subject of the Heirarchy of Asut from the land of the Orsai. The Orsai tolerate no other religions. For some reason, the Orsai attacks Tarahir (who has allies to the north), and sack the city leading many off to slavery.

However, a large group of refugees escaped into the mountains. As they were being chased, the refugees hid in an ancient dwarven stronghold, long abandoned. Somehow, the Royal Road there activated, and sends the refugees to Belynar in Cyradon.

The Dwarves detect this use of the Royal Road, and from the time of the first fluctuation, have been preparing an expidition to travel to Cyradon and reclaim their ancient city of Blackflame (which they closed when the mines played out - they had planned to return centuries earlier when the magical minerals had regenerated, but the Roads had not been working).

Several days after the refugees arrive in Belynar, so do the Dwarves. The Gryphons are aleady in Belynar, having an Eyrie high above it. The Nagazi (ultra-civilized lizardmen) had also detected the portal use, and went to check it out. The elves had also detected that first fluctuation and formed teams to investigate.

You end up with many races in the city in the middle of the blasted wastelands. Also living nearby are the Rhona, Gnomes who have been trying to heal the wounded land of Cyradon, but with little effect.

With the gathering of so many races, the Rhona decide to attempt their ritual one more time, hoping that perhaps they just did not have the right mix of participants. The ritual works beyond their expectations, and instead of a few square miles being restored, an area with a diameter of 100 miles is retored!

This is where the back story leaves off and and play begins. There are opportunies for exploration of this new lands (for the refugees), of political intrigue with the new neighbors... Danger surrounds them at every turn, and not just physical danger!! Some folks have even been saying that they think that the Devastation is haunted...

*******************************

The above is what I wrote about Cyradon over on the Dragonsfoot forums.

A few things not mentioned above:

There are three different classes of lizardmen. The Nagazi are ultra-civilized (think renaissance Italy for their type of culture). Then there are the Nagaral, who live in city-states (think ancient babylon), and then there are the Nagah, who are very aggressive and nasty. I guess that comes from worshipping a dragon (who speaks to them through a special totem each tribe has).

There are also the Aoifer, a race of lion-centaurs who live in one corner of Cyradon.

The elves of Cyradon are fairly civilized, however there are several small nations of them, and those nations are internally divided into factions (which cross national boundries sometimes), and some of those factions do not want the humans, while other welcome them. Overall a tanse situation.

The Devastation is also filled with many horrors and twisted creatures created by the Davastation. Nothing there is friendly, to say the least (hungry might describe it better....).

The setting itself contains absolutely no halflings. Other than that, the rest of the races from HARP are present, along with the Nagazi, variant Dwarf, Elves, and Gnomes, and the Grpyhons as possible PC races.

Any specific questions? I will try to answer what ones I can.

I think it would be really cool to play a Gryphon.

How much will this setting be?

How many pages?

How does one get a license with HARP to write our own settings with the system? (okay, this last one isn't setting specific, but I can't find any info on the websites pertaining to this so I am asking here...hope that's okay) :)

Is this world designed for just the more heroic races as playable races, or will there also be rules for playing the nastier races as well?

What is a Schirae like on a bad day if eating other people is on a good day? (sounds like being on their good side is a bad idea ;) )

Does this world have any short races, or just human sized ones? If not, I would find that a little unusual, but also cool in a way.

What are the stats for a Gryphon? I would want to give them a try just because and throw one at my group to surprise them with what can be done with this system.

What are the religious and cultural practices of each major region, and how to they view each other?

Cyradon is currently slated for 160 pages (perfect bound) with a retail price of $30. You can see some previews at http://www.harphq.com/SneakPeek/4300_MAIN.htm including the final map of the world (Mithra) by Jonathan White, and the final maps of Cyradon itself by Sarah Wroot (of the Dying Earth game books). Both maps are absolutely incredible.

The setting is primarily designed for you to play one of the refugees or the normal inhabitants of Cyradon, however, like in HARP, the monsters are created the exact same way as characters would be made, so it would be possible to play one.

The shortest race available on Cyradon is the Rhona (a type of Gnome). You also have Dwarves as well.

Schirae on a bad day? Well, let's just say it isn't pretty, and that a lot of pain would be involved....

Stats for a Gryphon? Look in the monster section of HARP, at the stats for the Griffin. The Gryphons are more intelligent versions of them.

Religions and cultures - that would be a little too much to go into here.... hehe

Licenses - just email ICE directly (our CEO specifically) with your proposal for what you want to do with HARP. We have already licensed HARP for the following: http://domibia.com/gc3e.shtml

Plus we have another license that is pretty much complete, and the licensee goes by the name of Temprus (I do believe he hangs out here from time to time). Over on the ICE forums he did mention to expect a formal announcement from him soon in this regard. I won't spoil his surprise by revealing any details. :D

In short, ICE is very opening to licensing HARP to others.

That's cool, the sci-fi one looks cool...

Is there a weblink to more info on licensing, like costs, contractual obligations, stuff like that on the ICE website? if you want to, you can email me at kevin_1796(at)yahoo(dot)com with more information. Either way is fine with me. :)

Cyradon looks pretty cool. and I really want to toss an ingelligent gryphon at my group, when I get one. I am assuming they can converse with everyone else in the world, right?

No, there isn't any information of that sort available online just yet. We are working on hashing it out though so that we CAN put it online.

Sounds pretty interesting, but I admit I was a bit more interested in the kind of feel I got from that snippet of fiction online than the description you gave. Sounds a little complicated, though I can certainly understand a half page description not doing it justice. I'll definitely have to take a hard look at this once it comes out. Thanks for the response.

Yes, Gavin's fiction was excellent. However, due to some changes that had to be made, it is not entirely accurate anymore. However, the basic elements of it still remain.

Actually it isn't very complicated, but it CAN be if that is what the GM wants. The basic premise is that the refugees get to explore a brand new land. Due to some of the dangers of the land, the best exploration teams are going to be groups put together for that purpose (i.e. adventuring groups). There are lots of ruins to explore, not only of the main city Belynar, but of other small towns and cities within the Devstation.

However, if you belong to a group that likes fighting monsters, there are plenty of those (especially if/when somebody disturbs the constructs and monsters held in stasis under the city (they were used in coliseum games - and stasis was cheaper than feeding/maintaining them)).

If you like politically based games, there are opportunities for that as well. There are different factions among both the elves and the Nagazi (and the others as well) which can setup some very complicated dynamics if the GM wants (these will be barely touched upon in the core book, just enough to let you know that they are there)

If you like to player trader-types. Lots of opportunies for that as well. The Nagazi love commerce, and there are tons of items under the city of Belynar just waiting to be found, and traded for goods (such as food for survival of the refugees).

In short, Cyradon is a place where adventures of all types can be found, IF you want them. It is a setting designed to be one where there are reasons for PCs to go adventuring.

Cyradon is land that has just (within the space of a few days) been radically changed due to the arrival of the refugees. Like HARP, Cyradon was designed with campaign flexibility in mind as well. :D

Here's the next question.

How easy would this be to use with standard d20 rules?

How are the maps? Any up close city maps or just an overview?

How much is game mechanic as opposed to 'fluff'

I can definitely see that a world like that would have a lot of potential. I'll have to take a look at this when it comes out. You need any help getting it finished. ;)
