Has anyone tried Grim-n-Gritty Hit Point and Combat Rules, Version 4.0

Will we see more firearms rules?

Probably not. Everybody and their dog has published some d20 firearms rules. I once had a publisher offer me a writing job on a book of firearms, but I lacked the patience to stat out a lot of weapons. I can barely sit still long enough to write a page, let alone a book.

There are a few firearm rules in the GnG 4.0 rules (mostly dealing with automatic weapons fire), but that's about as much as I'm interested in chasing.

But you sat still long enough to write that longish post up above which, I wanted to comment, would make, with some revision/expansion, a great introduction to and justification of the system.

Ken, I will buy your system. I looked at it a while ago and decided I liked 3.3 better. (What's this 3.6 I hear tell about? I wants me some of that!) Now, I'm starting to be swayed. Who knew it was that easy.

From memory (as the buy your product page is loading slowly tonight) your class defense bonus is your Reflex save or your BAB, whichever is higher. I was upset when I read that, because I'd been playing with the 3.3 system's class defense bonus progressions, and the character I was playing right then would end up losing 5 points of defense, going from a 30 to a 25 at 9th level. I was curious, for the sake of my prior minmaxing, how easy it would be to simply add class defense bonuses as they exist in 3.3 back into the v.4 rules? Would that break everything?

I doubt it would break anything, but the 4.0 defense bonuses tend to balance out a little better at higher levels.

It's been a while (about four years) since I've taken a look at the 3.3 version, so I can't remember. I don't think that BAB or base Reflex bonus was the standard in 3.3. I do know that was the standard in the "Revised and Simplified" rules -- but the whole purpose of those rules was to eliminate the need for extra charts and other crunch.

The 4.0 defense bonuses should be higher than 3.3 defense bonuses, because 4.0 bonuses scale like attack bonuses, rather than saving throws. Also, the penalties for wearing armor tend to be a little different from the standard rules.

By the way, I honestly can't remember if a 3.6 version of the rules exists!

Oh, and thanks for purchasing the rules.

Though I think you'd be MUCH happier purchasing 100 separate copies. Really!

Ken, if it isn't a bother, might you link me to a place I could aquire your "Revised and Simplified" rules? I was really digging the change you made to critical hits there, and the new v.4 doesn't seem to support it. I'd be very grateful, though, I don't think I'll buy another copy even if you do send me the "Revised and Simplified" rules. I'm poor.

I bought the new 4.0 rules the moment I heard it came out weeks ago. I was a GnG and D20 Sleeping Imperium (oh! how I miss it!) fan way back. I even borrowed concepts from the 2001 era GnG for a dirt simple psychic dueling system I whipped up.

Just wanted to express thanks for all the good stuff I've made use of from your stuff Ken. Don't know if I'll get to use the new stuff yet, but I'm impressed as always in the way innovative new rules can stretch the boundaries of new ideas.

There's an updated version? I've been playing GnGr (I don't know which version, but I think it's the most recent free one) for months now and my players love it. It's starting to get a little wonky at near-epic levels though... I think I may have to break down and buy this one.

ENWorld is hosting a free copy of the "Revised and Simplified" rules. You should be able to find it in their downloads section.

I didn't like how the R&S crits worked in combat. Too much extra rolling, and it felt a bit artificial. That's why I didn't use it in GnG4.0.

Thanks.

I'm still piddling with the Imperium, though I haven't got a website anymore. I've a contract with a publisher for a POD version of the book--should I ever manage to finish it. Started having a bear of a time making d20 fit my ideas (again!), so I'm looking at using OGL content to make a setting specific collection of rules.
