Paizo apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused. I personally apologize for posting some
unintentionally incorrect information.

Thank you for your honesty and candor. The incident shall be referred to ChessGate '06 then promptly forgotten.

I still want my tee-shirt ;)

However, it appears that Wizards of the Coast did ask us for our list a few months back.
Aha.

It is WotC's right to ask for this information; they quite legally own that list of subscribers. We were not aware they were using the list for marketing purposes (and nor was our contact at WotC who asked for it in the first place) and had we known this was for target marketing we'd have provided them with a much more appropriate list. We've let them know we can give them that and they've asked us to do so and are scrapping the list they used for the D&D Chess mailer.

I think this is a pretty good example of why it's a good idea to complain about things. Squeaky wheel, and all that. I'm glad to see that voicing my concerns has alerted the Paizo staff to a policy loophole that they missed. I hope that this means that I have seen the last of WotC's junk mail.

I also want to give you folks a heads-up that, according to our WotC contact, one additional mailing has already gone out to this list. Yes, more mail is coming. However, the new list that is mindful of privacy settings is now in place and WotC has scrapped the one they used for this campaign.

Paizo apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused. I personally apologize for posting some unintentionally incorrect information.
Thanks for the apology. It's more than I expected, given the attitudes that advertisers usually have to my desire to avoid their hard work. I'm also happy to see that you double-checked to make sure that you were free of fault. It wasn't strictly necessary and it indicates a good attitude toward your customers. Cheers!

So, how is getting a single piece of junk mail such a terrible thing that it spawns a three page thread?

I got the impression from Dr. Awkward's OP that this is more a question about principles, and less about two pieces of paper.

It's not the piece of mail itself, but an action that is by some considered a violation on their preferences re their privacy.

But hey, that's just my impression.

Mad props to Paizo for getting on the case! I wish other companies were as alert when dealing with stuff like this.

/M

I'd like to add that I think Paizo should retool that check box.

Perhaps instead of click here to be taken off the list, make it click here to be placed ON the list.

That way, those of you who apparently enjoy junk mail, and the "opportunities" it offers can still receive it, while those that do not enjoy nor have use for it will not waste paizo's resources as the ads are thrown away.

:)

i before e... except after c... ;)

It's about the same as yahoo who has a similar setup for their spamming. you've got to opt-out to not get spammed by them. I'd rather have ads from Paizo than crap generated from yahoo selling addys.

i still didn't get the ad. and i belong to a lot of mail lists, subscriptions, message boards, online stores, etc...

i'm feeling left out.

can someone post a scan for me? please. pretty please with dice on top.

Maybe all those who have gotten the mailer should send their copy to diaglo so he'll feel loved again... ;)

I find it quite surprising that it's not identified as such from the get-go. Why exactly would I be upset about the not-exactly-herculean task of throwing out two cards? Of course it's not the mail itself. It's why I got the mail and the implications of getting it.
