Direct mail companies compile mailing lists of all sorts of demographic groups, then sell them to their clients. A client can order a list by choosing age, gender, income, level of education and hobbies.

Your getting targeted for mailed advertising was not necessarily because someone sold the details of your account with Paizo or any other single company. Your information is being harvested all the time, from a variety of sources.

IF ANY of you looked at the card it is from WOTC themselves.
Yes, it was sent from WotC (by an ad agency, on their behalf). However, WotC does not have my address and would not send Bryon something with "Dragon" in the business field unless that was how his address appeared for them. The mailing list was collected seemingly from the old subscriber list WotC had for Dragon/Dungeon and RPGA members. That's what the thread is about.

Or I guess it's actually about how much folks hate advertising, but that was the question posed.

We don't serve your kind here

I didn't get a chess set offer in the mail. I am a Dungeon subscriber (month-by-month). I usually get very little junk mail, mostly credit card offers. I get lots of spam on my free email accounts (earmarked for that purpose).

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. Did Joshua Frost shoot first?

Darn right I shot first. I shot first and I'd do it again.

What I definitely didn't do is sell our subscriber list to the company that sent out this mailer. WotC can certainly look at our list if they like but they have not done so since before we began publishing the magazines under license. I suspect the folks who received this are on a target marketing list that includes subscriber information from prior to Paizo's acquisition of the Dragon and Dungeon license.

Now, if this thread wants to continue down the angry road of advertising-bashing, I'd suggest another thread with an appropriate title that doesn't innacurately bemoan the folks that provide my paycheck. :-)

I'd suscribe to the "Chess set offer!" mailing list if that means I'd get sent Dungeon or Dragon.

Am i reading this backwards?
