Has your XBox 360 died ?

I've had mine for almost 4 years now and, and have yet to experience the RRoD. I hold on to all of my old systems (and collect older ones), so I sincerely hope my 360 survives many more years.

Thanks, I'm counting number of people who have had one or more failures cos some people have gone through many boxes I thought id be generous with the stats. So with you and three friends - and the fact I couldn't count last time - thats now 19 people, 12 having at least one failure and 7 never having a failure.
What is the point of taking a sample size this small & scattered? Just curious.

I've had 2 360s. Sold the white one to get the black one. Both worked fine. :)

I don't have enough friends to ask ??? ;)

Seriously, its just a lite small poll to tell me approx if my mates with boxes that we have all had failures is the going rate or whether were unlucky. Seems at mo that were a little bit unlucky. Your right in that an XBox magazine poll would give a better statistical result - but I trust the numbers this way.

So were at 21,12,9 now or about 57% of people have had a failure. Compare that with the earlier post from Welverin...
...but Game Informer conducted a poll on console failure rates where 54.2% of 360 owners reported they're system failing on them.

Thats pretty close. Close enough for me to believe thats probably about right.

The RROD (for anyone unfamiliar) is an error code shown on the front panel of the 360 that has 3 of the 4 quadrants of the ring showing a solid red LED, with the northeast quadrant left blank. Along with the red LEDs you also get no video and a paperweighted Xbox.

The problem was caused by a faulty design that caused the motherboard to make poor connections with the CPU or GPU after exposure to heat/stress. This problem was created when Microsoft decided to use X-clamps to hold down the CPU and GPU heatsinks, which tend to warp the motherboard over time.

The fix involves taking apart the Xbox (yes, this does void your warranty if you still have one but will not jeopardize your XboxLive account as you will only be replacing non-electronic hardware inside the box) and replacing the X-clamps with plain old bolts and replacing the crusty old thermal grease with snazzier thermal grease.

1. Take apart the Xbox.
2. Remove the X-clamps and posts on the bottoms of the heatsinks that insert into the clamps (with a pair of pliers, they are threaded)
3. Wipe off as much of the old crusty thermal grease as possible from the CPU/GPU/Motherboard.
4. Coat the components you cleaned off with new Arctic Silver thermal grease and bolt on the heat sinks with proper bolts and spacers.
5. Leaving the cover off and DVD unplugged, turn on the Xbox with the fans blowing on the exposed heatsink and let sit for a minute or two until it overheats (red flashing lights) then IMMEDIATELY power off.
6. Tighten the bolts again if you can.
7. Reassemble the Xbox and hope your time and $14 spent was well worth it.

A perfect video (with part numbers visible for the bolts and washers) can be found here

If your machine is out of warranty already and you aren't afraid of digging into electronics give it a shot.

I got a RROD. It took a couple years from when I bought the device since I don't play nightly, but it happened. I have to say, although it took MS a while to publicly acknowledge the problem, I'm happy with the way they've handled it since then. It was a fairly simple process to get my device replaced.

Sabathius42: Thats good advice. I have some spare thermal grease so if this new one goes then ill try that out to give me something to use. Since mine works for 2 mins then fails I think its something that is fixable. I just know it would be hard to know what without proper test tools. Still, trying to make the thermal connection better / tighter might solve the problem.

alan:Thanks that's now 22,13,9. I agree that when both my mates who did get theirs fixed, MS did it very quickly and efficiently.

drothgery: Absolutely. But without it my stats from me and some friends would be 100% fails. So despite it having bias its better than accepting our local experience. I was expecting more people to say failed but we have a fair few without.
