Hasbro & Atari Resolve rights dispute over Digtal Rights to D&D

Wow, so they managed to get out of that like seven years early.

Now if they can just license it to a developer that can competently create some D&D games...

Sell the brand to EA?? Wouldn't that be like Activision selling Guitar Hero to Hasbro?

No. It would be like Microsoft acquiring FASA.

In such a deal, E/A would license the rights to the pnp game to whoever it wanted under whatever terms and conditions it preferred to impose. But the electronic rights would be theirs to do with whatever they wanted without interference by Hasbro or anybody else.

And to be clear on this point, there has been interference by Hasbro in the past. Their reputation in the industry is such that the creative element within electronic games' developers do not want to work with them -- or to work on -- licensed D&D titles for that very reason. And by "Hasbro" I do not mean WotC, I mean Hasbro itself.

You reap as you sow.

Actually, Daggerdale DID rise to #1 briefly in weekly sales (maybe it was daily sales?) on XBL. It has since plumetted back down -- but like any song, if you are The Man, you hype how high it went in a discrete point in time -- not how well it did over a longer point in time that doesn't make it look so good.

Well, unless you are marketing Michael Jackson's Thriller album, say.

It is a rather inferior product, but I do think it's worst sin was in reaching for too much given the limited platform it was released on. Magic:TG's success on XBL was easier to achieve as the nature of the product is static when uit comes to graphics.

hey, you spin that to make it sound the best that you can. No shame in that.

This is an important first step toward creating some good, or even great, D&D games. I'm really interested in new projects now Hasbro controls things, though I don't hold out much hope for Cryptic's Neverwinter. Maybe through Hasbro's ties with EA D&D could again pair with Bioware? Oh, one could hope...

Cryptic has put out some good games, although their reputation for releasing games before they are ready is earned. Although that's partly Atari's fault. With Atari out of the picture for both Hasbro and Cryptic, and the release of Neverwinter pushed back a year, I'm optimistic it just might be a good game!

I'd love to be pleasantly surprised, especially with their Forge modding stuff, and doubly so if it's functional on a console like I've heard rumored Skyrim's will be.
