I know I could have mentioned Salvatore, but lets face it humans couldn't even see in the Underdark to tell what was going on during his youth for a movie to even be made from it!

You don't think they'd make the concession of adding some lighting in for that part so we could see it?

They could try, but House Do'Urden might have something to say about being invaded by the grips to rig the lighting.

You know Drizzt movie would sell tickets if done right!

Well... The city would be fine, it would just have a constant greenish/bluish glow. There is faerie fire everywhere after all (if I remember the books right, been years).

Plus there is supposed to be plenty of light sources still; lava flows, bioluminescence from various fungus, plants, etc.

Ugh.

A world where the Transformers movie is considered a success is not a world I care to live in anymore.

If it weren't for my hyperactive imagination, I'd off myself now.

This article doesn't read like an American-style hagiography: clearly, this guy is good.

Actually, he sounds like he has the ability to get a good D&D movie made. It's about time, too. WotC is sitting on some great IP with D&D and FR so why not make some real money from these lines? PHBs and other game books and products don't make real money but movies and the toy spin-offs could make Hasbro some real money... if they don't screw it up by letting a 12 year old novice run it this time.

D&D and its related brands could inspire the next Star Wars or Lord of the Rings from a sales point of view. If I owned or ran Hasbro I know what I would be doing right now.

Unlikely.

You are missing a key point in the article. The reason Hasbro was able to get the Transformers and GI Joe movies off the ground is because the CEO tied the films to financiers from the military/arms industry. Both movies are steeped in American military propaganda (well, we haven't seen GI Joe yet, but it will be). In case you haven't noticed, the military is trying damned hard to recruit the youngsters.

...And Transformers was not only a commercial for the marines, it was also a pretty blatant commercial for the Automobile industry... and of course, the toy industry.

Unfortunately, corporate pressure to create something "mainstream" and "low-cost" will probably kill any attempt at a quality D&D movie. You can expect a sub-Willow product at best.

I do think an all CGI Dark Sun film could be pretty cool though, if they get Brom involved as the artistic director. The Verdant Passage is a fairly tight story arch for a coheasive film. The rest of the series could be condensed into a single sequel.

Maybe you're right but I think The Crystal Shard would also make a fantastic movie in the right hands.

Sure, you wouldn't get financial support from the corporate socialists in the military-industrial complex but you've got some great set pieces and a grand battle at the end (and I say that not even liking R A Salvatore as a writer). Check out the graphic novel/comic adaptation for an abbreviated version suitable for production.
