Hasted Sors, and the Metamagic monkey

Because I like playing with colors, let's say that gold = standard action and green = partial action due to haste.

A sorcerer could do something like this:

Cast Empowered Chain Lightning + 5' step, cast Disintegrate.

However, if he wanted, he could also do this:

Cast Empowered Chain Lightning, move 30'.

The thing that I've seen debated is whether the sorcerer could take a 5' step with his normal actions, then move 30' with his partial action due to Haste. Such a move would look like this:

Cast Empowered Chain Lightning + 5' step, move 30'.

It states in the rules that you can't take a 5' step if you've already moved during the round, but some people argue that Haste is a special case.

[Edit] Reread the posts and wasn't sure who was saying what, so I changed the post to simply state the rules (or what I think are the rules :D).

I'll point out that the Sage ruled you don't get more then one five foot step a round, no matter what. Same thing applies to ancient wryms; only one five foot step.

(Nice work with the colors, dude.)

From my point of view the argument for an extra 5' step with Haste is no stronger than the argument that I can take as a standard action: move 30', declare Ready Action, as Ready action: step 5' and attack. Superficially that looks OK...until you read the rules carefully.

Well Ridley, the arguement went on for about 12 pages, then a new thread started and it went on for several more pages, so its really not quite that cut and dry.

In any case, yeah, a sorcerer can do something else the same round he casts a metamagiced spell, as long as he is hasted.

A full round action does not equal a casting time of one round. That makes this one easy - yes the sorceror can cast an empowered (or whatever) spell and still have a partial action from haste.

The question of what happens with spell with a one-round casting time is more difficult, and was debated at great length, coming down to:

Either:

It takes the whole round, so you could only get your partial actions if you:

Round 1: take partial action , begin casting spell

Round 2 finish casting spell, take partial action

(Gee, I like colors, too. I forgot all about them :))

OR

You can combine your regular action with the partial action to cast a spell with one-round casting time. That is:

Round 1: begin casting spell, finish casting spell

Round 2: As normal for haste - one regular round's worth of actions plus a partial action.

I like the first option better (I think it follows the rules better), but the Sage likes the second one. Once again the Sage and I disagree :).
