Have any of you been to the Wizards boards?

Well, I did saw that debate. It nearly got heated on your end as you continue to press your stance. It comes to a point where you should just let it go and agree to disagree.

I called it the way I see it.

I am on that board as well as this one, and I can partially agree about the fanboy density. With all the M:TG and Pokimon garbage, they seem to get a younger crowd than here. On the other hand, it is a good board to post on for an official answer. There are some knowledgable people posting there.

I visit there every couple of months or so (more earlier on in d20M existence). Most of the big questions have been thrashed out to my satisfaction now, and I've got rules which I find satisfactory for my purposes. I still post there as Plane Sailing.

Generally I find the tone to be slightly less measured over there, and I get the feeling that there is a higher level of immaturity expressed. Not that I'm a paragon of virtue myself, of course :)

I do like the way that Charles makes an effort to reply to questions about the rules, and even on the occasions when I don't agree with something in the answers it is still nice to hear a designers opinion.

Cheers

That, and the amount of other knowledgable folks on those boards make it worth checking into from time to time, though I havent really seen anything truly new or original come up there in a while. It is nice to see Charles and Rich Redman occasionally put in their 2 cents worth and I've picked up a lot of good stuff that way.

Were you talking about the plastic minis debate or jezter6's thread?

If the plastic minis thing, I know I got a bit sarcastic (though not really heated as a couple other folks on there) but I was a bit cheesed by the total company suck-up position that Charles had taken on that one; he is so influential on the boards that when he posts flawed arguments that merely reflect the company line someone should challenge him with logic or a bunch of the more impressionable members on those boards will take everything he says as law and then spout it from the rooftops, or worse yet, spend a lot of their money on something based on his word. I really like Charles, love his work, and respect his participations in the boards and his prowess as a game designer, but that time he pretty much stuck his chin out.

Well, he's only human. Granted, there will be others who agree with him, and will even stick up for him, but there are others who hears what he has to say as an official ruling, and then decided to use Rule 0.

But that's what you get for reaching out and helping the customers and/or fans of their work. Not many game designers would do that.

Well, yeah. That entire deal right there is the reason that it's a bad idea for designers or authors to have messageboards that other people can post on. :) You come in trying to have a fun discussion, and then somebody gets rude to you, and you either have to get rude back, and be labelled an egotistical jerk (for firing back) or just bear the abuse and hope that your fans beat the snot out of the rude person.

I've seen it happen on RPG boards. I've seen it happen on TV boards where the writer/producer posts. I've seen it happen on author boards. Never pretty, and no real graceful way to deal with it -- aside from, say, not allowing rude posts.

Sheesh guys... I wasnt even rude to Charles (I actually was complimentary in several points), I just *disagreed* with him, and did so logically and for the most part rather politely... several others did not. I even apologized in my post if it sounded like I was being a bit strong, as that wasnt my intention.

It wasnt a discussion that had anything to do with any of the product lines that he even remotely has done any work on or has experience with; he wasnt handing down a ruling or doing anything other than discussing the topic.

It was in response to his *opinion* about something that quite a few posters had already posted contrary and negative opinions on way prior to his involvement.

I would expect, as a professional writer, that you would expect discourse in response to posting your feelings in a room full of people who obviously already feel the other way, and not a string of sycophantish fanboy posters. But I expect that Charles took it exactly like I meant it, as a logical disagreeing to an *opinion* he posted, because I'm fairly sure that he is an adult and doesnt have the time to count sycophants.

I'm also pretty sure he isnt curling up on the couch in his pink terry cloth bathrobe with a tub of Ben and Jerry's watching Sleepless in Seattle till he cries himself to sleep over it either.

Nah, he's going through a "I'm a first-time daddy" phase, what with the newborn daughter. :D

Heh heh.

Dark circles under eyes. Look of fear. Nervous twitching.

Yep, I recognize those signs. Been there 3 times over, myself. :D
