I'm hoping to finish the major story arc for my current campaign and it will be the first time that I have managed it.

As a player I've only completed one campaign and that was Night Below. The last session was held almost a year after the group last met and it coincided with the release of 3rd ed. It was a fun ending and my character destroyed the Helm of Brilliance that he was wearing to cause major damage to the bad guy. It felt good to finally finish the campaign.

Oh, now that you say so... we played Night Below in 3E and finished that... the DM wanted to continue at some point with those characters but none of the players wanted to (we were too spoiled with all the treasure from the adventure, my halfling arcane trickster from there has ridiculous amounts of stuff - especially after we got to roll 5 major treasures in the end each (something we could quickly grab from a big treasure hoard before heading out, there wasn't much time, therefore the random rolls) and I rolled some real uber items there... greater vestment of power, +5 stat book, +3 stat book and stuff like that :D)! That and we prefer 3.5 much more now (that was still 3.0).

Bye
Thanee

Yes but neither of them where D&D ones. One was a Star Trek one that ended with the crew deciding to collapse a wormhole and strand themselves (voyager-style) light centuries away from the Federation alone against a fleet of (borg-like) enemy ships rather than let the enemy arrive in the Alpha Quadrent.

The other was a Call of Cthuhlu "Orient Express" campaign.

Those have definate ends, D&D campaigns have tended to fizz out...

Yeah, depends on the type of game. Campaigns with definite story arcs have endings.

Many of my campaigns have definite story arcs. But the characters are still around, and you can always have a sequel.

I've finished a short campaign which we did just to learn the rules when 3E was first out. And I've finished a long Dragonlance campaign (BBEG defeated, kingdom rejoices, and all of that jazz).

never finished a campaign

I've never finished one as a player or a DM. They all just die or fade away. I am trying to finish an alternate-D&D game campaign now, but it's tough. The players completed about 2/3, but scheduling the last 1/3 has been difficult. I think the most important factor is to have an end planned. Most campaigns in which I've been involved don't have such a plan. I'm trying to change that when I DM.

I ran the Apocolypse Stone several years ago. That's effectively ending a campaign. I came close recently, but we decided to take some time off before the 'finale' and play Kult for a while.

I usually finish at least one campaign a year.

One of the groups I run for is based around the local university gaming society. Because of this players come and go as they start or finish university. Many of my players are also only around during term-time.

Therefore my campaigns are generally written to start when the academic year begins and run for all three terms, before ending when the academic year finishes.

It can be a pain, but I've found that new players [not always beginners] to my group are happier in a fresh campaign, being part of the story from the beginning and not coming in part-way through.

Nope, never finished one - but we don't run "normal" campaigns that others around here seem to.

We keep playing the same characters until:
1) the characters retire due to (very) old age, or
2) a TPK occurs.

In more than a decade of gaming, the characters have never made it to retirement age before a TPK gets 'em.
