Have you ever found employment while in a bar?

Not real jobs, but those aren't being offered to your adventurers, are they?

"You, young man! We desperately need people to chop wood and wash our clothing. The job pays 2 silver a day. Can we count on you?"

Makes sense. I actually have a few players that do that me, "I'm just first level. I really should work in a bar to make money." Or they try to come up with some hair-brained scheme that makes lots of money.

Personally, I am a bit tired of the "you meet in a bar". However, Luke Skywalker meet Han Solo in a bar (cantina). We all know how bad-ass Han solo is.

you gotta look at it as hiring mercenaries or hitmen, not as like, lawyers or doctors, although both I would think could have jobs offered, especially after a barfight.

Yeah well, some people get some really hair brained ideas in their heads and think the whole world should work to their advantage.

I once had a player who wanted to retire his character for a few years and insisted that his moderately high level (12th? 15th? In 1e.) character should go up at least one level per year - in retirement.

Where do adventurers go in town? To the Inn. Where can they hang out during their down-time? In the Inn or Bar. So where do you find adventurers? At the Inn or Bar. You aren't going to find many of them hanging about at the laundromat or the flour mill.

If you like, mix it up a bit and have your stout warrior approached at the Weaponsmith or Armorer. Or your Wizard approached while he's buying scrolls.

I've never sought employment in a bar. But if I were a treasure hunter, assassin, tomb robber, or dragon slayer, I probably wouldn't advertise in the local paper.

It's all about chiffre. You don't advertise as an assassin. You advertise as "bug chaser, taking care of your vermin."

It's like the guild of... seamstresses in Ankh-Morpork (reported to have 147 members, and a search of the guild hall turned up 6 sewing needles).

The first time it happened I was getting interviewed for a job at the pub. Someone in the booth behind me overheard the conversation, then came up to me afterwards and said that I was overqualified to work there. He then offered me a job at his tech company, and it was the best job I ever had.

The second time I was swing dancing at a bar when a casting agent came up and asked me to dance in a movie. (It was fun!)

No? Yes?! I actually got my jobs through an application and a resume. I hope my D&D hero doesn't have to worry about paper work, "section b, paragraph A, says I must submit for random negative energy screenings. They assure me it's strictly confidential."



Uh huh.

You know, I was actually thinking about creating an application for the players [for their characters] and then handing it out and having them fill it out after they first create their characters. Whatever they put for previous employment, I'd give them a bonus on skill checks in a related field. Would obviously be slightly different than nowadays, but it would give me all the info I would need.

You guys are all just city-folk who don't understand the concept of "The watering hole". Where I live, there are TWO BARS, and that's that. Everyone knows everyone else through the bars and restaurants - it's how small-town life pretty much works. People gather at these places... it's natural that in a society that doesn't have internet job postings, or even resumes, that people get hired at the bar.

I had a newspaper editor who used to call in news tips from the Holiday Inn bar, which is probably pretty close.
