Having a connection problem.

After restarting my laptop, I tried to connect to the internet. After logging on, my MSN Messenger (that starts up automatically) didn't log on, and I got this image on my toolbar (I enlarged it a bit for easier look):

I'm on a home network, and none of the other computers are having problems. I can also connect to the other computers, and download files they're sharing/upload files to their shared folders. Some more images to show what I saw:

In fact, the only way that I am posting this is leeching off of someone's wireless router. Does anyone have any idea of what kind of problem this could be, and if it's a hardware or a software problem?

Thanks for your help.

You didn't get assigned an IP address when you rebooted. The IP info you show in image three has no DNS servers or Default Gateway which you will need in order to get to the Internet. You can try this first:

-Open a command prompt (Start | Run and type cmd)
-Type ipconfig /renew

Then see if that goes away.

If not try rebooting and seeing if you get assigned an IP. If that doesn't work we might need to know a little more about how you normally connect.

I've tried both releasing/renewing and rebooting, and they don't seem to work.

It's most likely a problem on my end, although I wish I knew how to check (my network settings knowledge is a little on the shallow side). The MSN Messenger connection checklist says that I'm not getting a DNS something-or-other.

There are six computers on the network; it's a high-speed DSL line. The router is connected to a DSL modem, and each computer is directly connected to the router through a hard line. I can access only one person's shared files on the network, now.

If you are using a router you should receive an IP address from your router (assuming DHCP on client side). If that's the case, I would check what port you are plugged into. If it's port 1, make sure the "uplink" button is not pressed in, if it is unpress it. If that doesn't do it, reset your router by holding the reset button with a paperclick for 30 seconds.

Otherwise we'll need more information on your Internet setup, routers, switches, and Internet connection (cable, DSL with PPoE, DSL with MAC address filtering, etc).

Go to device manager and make sure that there aren't any problems with your NIC

Even if it says that everything is functioning normally, go to the support page of the manufacturer of your laptop and download the newest drivers for the network device and install them

Of course you are going to have to do it on another machine and then transfer the drivers via removable media (CD-R, thumb drive etc)

I used my friend's PC to download new driers, and then installed them, and rebooted. Nothing happened, so he suggested to back-up any files I wanted, and then partitioning the drive with enough space to back-up the files, and then clear the rest of the C:.

After getting rid of some files, it started working again.

I don't know what I did, but...
