HE-Fighter+WizardAreaEffectSpell=MassMarking

Not sure if this is legit.
But it seems to me that a fighter can mark anything they attack (hit or miss). Usually they get an attack maybe two with an exploit.

But being a half-elf lets you pick up wizard at-wills as encounters.
(Multiclassing, of course, would also allow this)

So a fighter with Scotching Burst (for instance) can lead off with a blast that marks a lot of people (and/or gives his buddies a bit of a defensive bonus).

Am I wrong?

I think a better example would be a Dragonborns breath weapon as it would allow you 2 turns to attack your marks, but from the way a fighters mark is described you're not wrong.

Piercing Smite, L1 Paladin encounter power:Hit, do damage and the target and a number of enemies adjacent to you equal to your Wisdom modifier are marked until the end of your next turn.

I don't think all of them can get Challenged by the Pally at once tho, so I'm unsure why they throw so many marks like that and how it helps them

Yeah but if the Paladin has no abilities that capitalize on said marking, what good is it? Can others utilize your marks? I thought if they marked someone it overrode yours. Maybe there are abilities that just function on anyone who is already marked.

I would think though that marking a huge amount of foes tends to be self correcting. :-)

Hah!

Seriously tho, I agree with Graf and Drakhar's interp of the rules.

So these techniques would allow the Ftr to mark multiple enemies for a couple of rounds.

Which seems like a useful, but not overpowered, technique.

Assuming the Ftr can survive it all!

If the squishies are vulnerable I think it's almost always better for the fighter to take the hits.
Especially if you've got a mob of minions in the back field a it seems like it might be a useful mini-control effect.

I agree that a db fighter can also do this. It's got less kiting potential if you're in base-to-base though.

Nothing says the fighter has to sit there and wait for them. It's easy for him to mark and then move someplace defensible (or just away). It's also possible for him to blast and then move into the midist of ranged attackers and get a lot of AoOs (or have them stand around for a turn waiting for the mark to go away).
