Heavy Metal magazine

First Post
Hey guys & gals. A thread about "The adult illustrated fantasy magazine". :)

I first came in contact with Heavy Metal through the 1981 movie a few years ago and I've also seen Heavy Metal 2000. Unfortunately I've only read one comic (The Carnival of Immortals by Enki Bilal) that was associated with the magazine... I'm from Sweden and I'm a bit too young too have been around when the magazine was published over here.

I really love the kind of pulpy retro science-fantasy that's portaited in both movies and Bilal's album. It's gritty and dark yet with a lot of humor. It kinda makes me feel I've missed out on a lot of neat stuff.

Enough about me though: I'm wondering what kind of impact the magazine's had in the gaming world. Have you read Heavy Metal? Has it influenced your gaming? Tell me about your adeventures/campaigns/worlds inspired by the Heavy Metal style! :D

The magazine has not, though the Locknar and Tarrakian from Heavy Metal: the Movie have had their cameos in past campaigns many years ago.

The man flying threw a window out of the sleaze bag tavern to be beaten by two bad guys is an encounter decription which has shown up a few times over the past 20 years as well.

"Six inches long; sorry, sixteen inches long" is a standard aside at the gaming table.

cthulhu = "uhluhtc" is also a standard chant for the bad guys to be saying when they have been discovered mid-ritual, as it were.

Lots of movie cameos; not much of the magazine in session.

I guess it has influenced my gaming, certainly Luis Royo has been a big influence on the mood of my gameworlds. When I bought it there'd occasionally be a brilliant, poignant little strip in it that stayed with me, eg "Goodbye Soldier!" about the futility of war. The t&a wasn't bad either. :)

I'm a big Heavy Metal fan. I have the first 48 issues in a box somewhere, and a fair collection of the issues between then and 1998...

There's a LOT of excellent stories in them, and I got hooked on Slaine via this venue also.

Unfortunately, HM2000 (F.A.K.K.2.) is the suck.

I've got several Heavy Metal mags at home. I have the issue with the start of REQUIEM: VAMPIRE KNIGHT, which promises to be a kickass little graphic novel. It's about a German soldier who dies in World War II and rises as a vampire in a seriously cool-looking gothic fantasy world called Resurrection.

In addition to this and other comics, it's also full of ads for erotica in art and photography, as well as for hentai manga and anime.

I've read/still own many issues from various eras, but don't buy it anymore (too many bad storylines or sucky art, or gratuitous erotica).

I have used several plotlines from the magazine as hooks or inspiration. Sometimes, characters inspire my PCs.

Head bangers in leather
Sparks fly in the dead of the night
It all comes together
When they shoot out the lights
50,000 watts of power
And it's pushin' overload
The beast is ready to devour
All the metal they can hold
Reachin' overload
Start to explode

Chorus:
It's your one way ticket to midnight
Call it Heavy Metal
Higher than high, feelin' just right
Call it Heavy Metal
Desperation on a red line
Call it Heavy Metal noise

Tight pants and lipstick
She's riding on razor's edge
She holds her own against the boys
Yea, cuts through the crowd just like a wedge
Ohh, can you feel the static
So many contacts being made
We've got up front fanatics
Tearing down the barricade
To reach the stage
Can you feel the rage

Perhaps the question would be, "which elements from the comics on Heavy Metal would one include?"

I for one would love to see a fantasy empire with the cool skyships and the gothic armor that the Vampire Knights wear in the Requiem comic.

I agree. I got into the mag in '93 and somewhere around '97, it just changed, and hasn't recovered (from what the occasional glance tells me.)

Gonna have ta dig some of these out for another go...
