Heighten Spell and metamagic?

Ohh ok I thought everyone was saying that...Doh I missed the point entirly. My bad. I was having one of my non functioning brain moments.

that, and Heighten lets you cram your higher level slots with lower level powers. if, for some reason or another, you find it necessary to cast a big fat wall of Glitterdust (to the exclusion of other spells), that'll let you use your 3rd+ level slots for that.

You don't need Heighten for that. A caster always has the option to fill a high-level slot with a lower-level spell. You just wouldn't get the higher save DC, or any other benefit from the slot increase.

meh. my DM is a hardass on spellcasters and he ruled it was required to fill slots like that.

well, i don't mind it. but it's best to know that that's just a house rule...

The PH clearly states that its a viable option, so I hope your DM knew that (as opposed to him making his ruling because he didn't read the book). ;)
