Hellboy cthulhu

I just saw Hellboy this weekend now that it's out on DVD (I missed it in theatres.) Probably the only good implementation of Cthulhu on film that I've ever seen, even if it wasn't exactly Cthulhu. All in all, I was quite impressed with a lot of aspects of it. I'll probably buy this one now.

Not too sure about that. Cthulhu wouldn't be vanquished so easily.

True that -- I liked it because of some of the themes and imagery, not because the characters were really that compelling, or because the plot denoument was that exciting.

Sure he would! Didn't you ever read the Call of Cthulhu story? One little bump on the head, and he's in another millenia-long coma...

the "Cthulhu" figure was never completely summoned; he wasn't "vanquished" because the summoning was interrupted and he was sent back into outer darkness. The guy Hellboy beat was just a corrupted form of Rasputin himself

Though it has absolutely nothing (formally) connecting it to the Chthulu mythos, the movie that I've seen which best captures the feeling of one is the somewhat unfortunately titled "She-Creature". I say unfortunate, because it is really a terrific film and hands down the best attempt at capturing the feeling of a Lovecraft story, but the movie title implies Rodger Corman.

One story I've heard, no idea if it's true or not. But according to it, when Ron Perlman was in full outfit for the movie he got a lot of women hitting on him, who suddenly lost interest later when he was out of costume. Draw what conclusions you will.

I never got the impression that Hell-boy was ever in any real danger. He just seemed so darn indestructible. So the suspense was kinda lacking.

I thought the big Rasputin Monster looked very cool, though.

Just bought the DVD set yesterday, never saw it in the theaters. I watched it but I was interrupted so much I need to watch it again just to put it all together. A bit later, I did listen to the commentary for a bit and the Director said he was going for a Lovecraftian feel. It's a cool flick though, Pearlman was great.

P.S. I thought In the Mouth of Madness was the best "Lovecraftian" flick.
