Hello from the new guy and general RPG Q's

Cardboard Carnage

First Post
Greetings everyone, I've been a D&D player since the early 80's and currently play 4e. I'm a long time RPGer but not very up to speed on taking part in forums and internet discussions. I began with basic D&D and moved on to 1e. I never played 2e because when it came out I was in college, got married, etc., as an "adult" I got back into it during 3.0/3.5 and now play 4e with some friends and my oldest two sons (I have 4 sons, so pretty soon I'll be running my own campaigns only with family members - ha!)

With all that being said, it's good to be here and find this forum (and a couple of others I have been taking part in).

Since this area is for General RPG Discussion, I thought I'd ask about a couple of other games I used to play. I looked around on ebay, but couldn't find much, so maybe I am looking in the wrong areas? Anyone here remember old games called Rune Quest and Traveller? We played both of those games in the 80's as well as D&D, it would be nice to have some memories and look over some of that old stuff again too.

Greetings everyone
Ahoy, matey! Welcome to the boards. :)

Traveller was one of the first RPGs I played, and yep, I've done some Runequest back when. Some fond memories, particularly of the former.

It might be worth your time to have a look here, by the way. They seem to be doing everything right these days. . . :hmm: Well, except maybe their 4e stuff - dunno what that's like.

Like Aus said, welcome aboard CC. Just don't take anything said to you personally and you'll really like it here.

I used to play Traveller too.
T'was a lot of fun and an interesting game. I still play a variant of it.

Anyways, glad to have you around.

Welcome.

I haven't played either of those you mentioned CC, but I have and have played Earthdawn and Tales From the Floating Vagabond. :p

(Don't mind me I have had a bad day today)

Hey and well met! Both licenses for Traveller and Runequest are currently with Mongoose publishing, who´ve brought out new, updated editions of the games. MongTraveller was especially well-received, while there was some consternation about MRQ.

Hope you´ll stay and happy gaming.!

Thanks for the info on Mongoose, I will check that out, that is great news for me... can anyone recommend any US based dealers that I could purchase these from?

Jack7, what is the variant on the game you currently play?

Thanks all! I am glad to have found this forum (I've been browsing the messages the last hour or so and it seems to be one of the better forums I have found).

As a side note, while Runequest is now published by Mongoose (and it is not quite the same system as the RQ you are used to), Glorantha also is covered in the long delayed Heroquest with a lot of input by Greg Stafford. His site is here.

The system is very different, and a lot more appropriate for some of the Gloranthan feel.

It's a game I created called Spheres of Influence. Actually I didn't create it, I adapted and revised certain aspects of several sci-fi RPGs, combining them with Star Fleet Battles ship to ship combat systems.

It operates much like Traveller does, but in a different futuristic milieu. It's a hybrid game really. Here are some sample missions I've written and we've played.

Anywho I'll bet you could get .PDF copies of Traveller off this site. Believe me if there is a game somebody has made a .PDF copy of it.

In the case you don't know, electronic, downloadable versions of many games are available from various places on the internet (if you wanted to go that route). Do a Google search for what you want and you'll probably pinpoint it quickly enough.

Welcome, welcome.

I'm a RuneQuester from way back, it's one of my top three games; the other favorites I play are Ars Magica and D&D. I had the good fortune to run the Big Rubble set for my friends and they had a blast in it.

If you want to buy the old stuff check out
The Hit Pointe
NOBLE KNIGHT GAMES
and of course the marketplace subforum here on this board.

Also The Acaeum is the D&D (and to a lesser degree OOP RPG) collector's site, they also have forums. Check out their Certifieds or post in their general threads if you have any question about OOP RPGs or ebay.
