Help and opinoin for new player

Sir Aerxnacht

First Post
I have just become a stepgrandfather and one of the things I'd like to do as my grandson gets older is instill in him a sense of independence but also social values. One of the things about D&D games I've observed is the cameraderie. Now, I'm a computer game player since the days of Atari and haven't played D&D in all the 30years it's been around. So is there a place for a 60yr+ game player to start playing the D&D games? Remember-I want to do this so that later I can use the gaming skills I've learned to expand the mind of youngster.

Depending on where you live, you might want to check for a local games shop to see if they have any groups looking for players. Most good game shops will have postings or lists near the back of the store with groups advertising for players.

Alternately, just pop by the game store on a weekend and, if it's a big enough size, chances are there will be some gamers there. Even if their game is "full", they'll probably be nice enough to let you watch the game to get the hang of the rules and also introduce you around to people who are accepting new gamers.

Lastly, put your residence in your profile so that other ENWorlders can see where you live. I'm sure there is someone around here near where you live who can give you some tips on where to go.

How did you hear about ENWorld?

Good luck!

Have you tried the Gamers-Seeking-Gamers forum here on ENWorld? That's how I found my current game, and I'm very pleased with it.

It also allows you to learn a little bit about a group before joining them.

If you are looking for games or gamers where you live, check out the various gamer registries listed at RPGIndex. Then add yourself to these gamer registries. The one that has worked for me the best has been AccessDenied.net.

So, Sir Aerxnacht. What City and State do you live in?

Welcome to EN World!

SamothDM has the right of it I think. Look at local gaming/hobby stores. I would also drop by the Gamers seeking Gamers Forum. You might also check to see if there is an EN World Gameday nearby. If you drop a location into your profile, many of the organizers will pipe up to let you know they are holding a gameday.

Like all social activities, you will meet a range of folks. Some of them will be people you do not relate to very well, some will be people you are easily comfortable around. Once you find a good, comfortable group, sit back and enjoy the game. In the meantime, feel free to post questions here. I check EN World because I enjoy the sense of friendly community here. Most of us are happy to offer advice.

I'm not the oldest one on the boards anymore. Try Meetup.com for a DnD or Roleplaying meetup near you. Thats where I found my group.

Definitely. You will want to find a group of 30+ as the average age though. However, nothing should stop you from playing. You can even play online with OpenRPG.

Welcome to the boards!

First of all, I congratulate you on seeing some of the strengths of RPGs for youngsters. :)

Folks have already suggested a number of good things - your Friendly Local Gaming Store, the Gamers Seeking Gamers forum here on EN World, other online forums (like RPG.net)...

There's also play-by-post games running on these boards (in the Talking the Talk and Playing the Game forums). They don't have all the social contact of a face to face game, but many of the good and useful qualites of RPGs are still present.

Also, there's a chatroom associated with tehse message boards. At the top of this page there's a little dropdown menu labelled "Chat". Using that will run the java chat client and take you to EN World's Chatroom, where one can often get hooked up with games running in chatrooms. Again, not all the good stuff found in a face to face game, but better than nothing.

(Or, if you are familiar with IRC, point your favorite client at chat.psionics.net, ports 6660-6669, #dnd3e).

Oh, and I almost forgot - if nothing else, you can simply get some of your own friends together to try it. In your age group that might not be the easiest thing in the world, but it can be worth a shot, especialy if you can nose about your workplace and see if anyone else has ever played or wanted to. Learning the ropes is easier if someone else teaches you, but with the books, and a place like this to ask questions, you can manage on your own :)
