Help! I have been converted!

I have been dragged (not quite kicking and screaming) from the D&D multiverse through the warp, only to emerge a dedicated Black Templar leader in service to his Holiness, the Emperor. I now fight to save humanity from the Tyranid Swarm threatening Excelscior IV.

I have lost interest in D&D :eek: I now play 40K & Mordheim...Help! What should I do?

Take a break - enjoy the change of mental thought. If it was meant to be, you will miss D&D at some point and come back - you know, struck with some great idea that you just want to partake in (as DM or player). Maybe even with a different group of players -- that's always one wya to make things interesting :-)

But, bottom line, don't force yourself back into it - it's a GAME and HOBBY not a requirement of life (which is a different game in of itself. ;-)

Relax - accept that your interest has wavered - doesmean it will always be this way :-)


Now that that is out of the way, can I have all your d20 materials for free ? :D
 


My d20 stuff for free? Let's see, that would be the 3 core books, the splat books, all the 3rd ed Forgotten Realms stuff, PsiHB, Manual of the Planes, Wheel of Time, Traps & Treachery & a few others I can't remember...hmmm...

You'd have to pry it from my dead fingers! My missus would kill me if I gave it away! :D

Never know, I might wind up playing again anyway...
 


I now play 40K & Mordheim...Help! What should I do?

The warhammer hobby can be a lot of fun, but consider...

The biggest difference (and for me, sticking point) between the various Warhammer games and D&D is that they are conducive to a different kind of "having fun with your mates" as games.

With few exceptions, the Warhammer games lead to antagonistic gameplay. I've seen far more arguments and ill-feeling across games of Blood Bowl, 40K or Necromunda than I ever have over any RPG I've ever played. The gameplay is aggressive and sometimes frustrating, and so often leads by default to an aggressive, frustrated atmosphere.

In GW games, there will be a loser - either you or your opponent, so ideally everyone involved must be good sports. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. GW games seem to be as bad as Diplomacy in the "starting arguments" stakes. RPGs are far superior in the "having a laugh with your mates" stakes.
Warhammer games: 0. RPGs: 1.

The Warhammer games, as an out-of-game-time miniatures hobby, can be very rewarding, but at a cost of a lot of money and huge amounts of time. RPGs as a DM's hobby in worldbuilding or campaign-building can also be very rewarding, at the potential cost of a lot of time. As for me, I didn't have a preference over creative outlet, and RPGs are an order of magnitude cheaper.

The third consideration is the amount of actual play time you get out of the game. On the whole, regular play of a gaming group is easier to organise and happens more regularly than miniatures gaming, with few exceptions. With regards to the actual amount of gameplay time versus preparation time/cost, RPGs win again by a long shot.

In terms of decorating your shelf or just plain looking pretty in general, the miniatures wargames have it, because they encourage painting and collecting to a much larger degree than your average RPG, and even have regular competitions, articles and advice in that vein..

So there you go; a breakdown of why you might want to dust off your DMG at some later stage after you've blown your budget on minis. Or, if you like Mordheim enough, there's little stopping you running a Mordheimesque game as a D&D campaign. Throw in minis and you may have the best of both worlds (although the minis would still blow your budget). :cool:
 

Play it out!

I don't blame ya. Everyone needs a change every once and a while. I mean, I'm hopelessly in love with d20 right now. Yet I find myself playing in an 2E L5R campaign? I was kicking and screaming for the first day of character creation but once they slowly pryed away the 3E PHB from my vice-like grip, I actually sat down to read some of the rules for L5R...and I liked it! Who'd a thunk?:confused:

Like clothes, new is definitely good but old is there in your closet when you need that cosey, comfy, god I missed you feeling..."snifle, snifle". :( ;)
 

Well, I'm playing a Warhammer Fantasy game with 3e dnd for the rules... we're playing through the Doom Stones, with many side trips (currently navigating through the Oasis of the White Palm).
 

Warhammer is a good system, I'll take your Black Templars and raise you over 200 Imperial Guard minis, some of them dateing back to Rouge Trader days. If you like Mordheim you should try tracking down a copy of Necromunda, the skermish game on which all other skermish games are based, or did Space Hulk come out before Necromunda? I can't remember. Of course it went OOP about 5 or 6 years ago. Personally I don't care much for 3rd ed 40k too HTH focused and too much power in the hands of super chararacters and uber units, it's worse than 2nd ed in a lot of those aspects which oddly enough was one of the things they were trumpeting about fixing. 5th ed WHFB isn't too bad but my buddies mostly play a bizzare amalgamation of rules we've taken to calling Warhammer 40K second and a half edition. Of course you want a truely great game you gotta play Rouge Trader :D, but it can be a bit of a hunt to find suplaments for that nowadays.
