OK, my players are going to be trooping through a phase spider den tonight. They are only 6th level, so I don't want them to face too many actual phase spiders, cause they will probably all die (they can't go ethereal at the moment). Also, I want to give the lair the feeling of really being inhabited by the spiders. As such, they are going to encounter several variants on the concept, and I need to figure out what CR they all are.
The different phase spider versions are:
Babies :
Baby phase spiders are just small monstrous spiders without the ability to make webs. They can't yet phase out of the prime plane. Normal small spiders are CR 1/2. but these guys can't make webs, so I'm guessing CR 1/3 each.
Juvenile :
Juvenile phase spiders are medium spiders, again without the webs, but with phasing. Medium spiders are CR 1, minus a bit for no web, plus a lot for phasing, so CR 2???
Adult :
Adult phase spiders are similar to juveniles, but large. They still have the usual monstrous spider Str venom instead of phase spider Con venom. Ordinary large spiders are CR 2, so these are CR 3???
Soldier :
These are standard phase spiders. CR 5.
Queen :
The queen is Huge, but she is also immobilised by the large chunk of magic stone that is imbedded in her abdomen. This rock has grown as she has, and this is what has given her children the ability to phase. If the PCs kill her and touch the phase stone, it will send them into the ethereal so that they can attack tje spiders there.
Huge spiders are CR 4, but the queen is immobile and can't make a web. She also can't leave the prime. I'm going to give here a bunch of Psion levels to make her dangerous, but for a base CR, I'm thinking maybe 2????
The Juvenile and Adult I think are about right, but I have no idea how much of a penalty should be given to the queens CR for being immobile.
