Help me buy some TV-DVDs

OK, I've been living out of the US for most of the past 12 years now (gosh, it's hard to believe it's been that long). For most of that time, I've had very limited or no access to current American TV. That one of the things that's hardest to keep up with when living abroad.

I've decided to try to return myself to the American couch-potato lifestyle, watching my favorite programes every week. I'm going to do it by buying a whole bunch of them on DVD. In spired by a quote I read somewhere that DVD is the only real way to watch TV nowadays, I've decided to take the money i might otherwise earmark for a premium pay-tv option and spend it on TV DVD serieses at Amazon.com or other vendors.

Ideally, I'll have several hundred hours of decent (or at least half-decent) TV. I'll be able to watch programes on a weekly basis--my plan is to watch on episode each week for whatever I buy (just as if it was on TV).

So, what I need are recommendations!!! I've been out of touch for a while, so I want to know what's good. There are a number of TV serieses I've never heard of that may be worth getting.

I have varied interests. I like sit-coms, sci-fi stuff, intelligent dramas, good action serieses, and good detective/crime shows. I'm particularly ignorant of any comedy serieses that have started since 1993.

I pretty much refuse to watch reality TV, however.

Otherwise, fire away. My main other requirements are that at least some seasons are available on DVD, and that the price not be prohibitive (like the Star Trek DVDs).

I believe the BSG season 1 may be out in Britain...or will be soon.

X-Files, definitely. Even the later seasons have some real gems.

Family Guy, since it seems you've missed its greatness.

Futurama.

Since most of the obvious Sci Fi answers are mentioned.

The Dilbert TV series DVD is good, the humor of the strip really got fleshed out well when they had an entire TV show to work with.

MASH on DVD is another good and popular one.

Season 4 of Enterprise, when it comes out, since S4 was the only really good season.

Old sitcoms like Taxi and Night Court are also out (or coming out) on DVD, and are always great for couch potato nostalgia.

As for Detective/Crime stuff, the most popular DVD's are doubtless CSI (the original, not Miami or New York spinoffs), Law & Order is quite popular on TV, but there are so many seasons that getting it all on disc is very hard.
