Nearly all I'd recommend are already listed. But I would recommend one that is a mixture of Intelligent drama, espionage, sci fi, and Twin Peaks-esque bizarreness. It's out of the late 1960s BBC.

The Prisoner

Good candidate for the most intelligent television series.

The only thing I'd recommend that I haven't seen mentioned is Miracles--a sadly cancelled show (because of Network bungling--not because the show itself) that's recently been released on DVD. I'd guess that anyone into X-files would probably like it, and for the same reasons, although it's more of a occult conspiracy rather than alien conspiracy theme.

I'm about to watch Berzerk--a fantasy TV series from Japan (animated). Although I can't in fairness recommend it (because I haven't seen it yet) it comes very highly recommended from all kinds of people.
