Help me choose a character direction

While I like playing the type of characters are dark/loner type, it is within the context of a "group game". ...

I liked Bard multiclasses (with some levels of barbarian, rogue and ranger. Sometimes sorcerer)

Althought it would probably spread you a little bit too thin, a combination of ranger and rogue for beginning, heading then to Arcane Trickster would be very capable of solo working and usefull for the team also.

For race, I would suggest tiefling, but it's ECL +1, so that might not be possible for you.

Tieflings make great Swashbucklers/Rog/Duelist/Invisible blade dudes.
