Help me convince my DM that monks aren't broken

But why would a low point buy give him an excuse? After all, everyone uses the same stats. I'd say go for a 28 point buy. Harsh on MAD classes, not so much on SAD classes.

Of course, you could do something like make a Battle Sorcerer (SRD/Unearthed Arcana), take feats like Improved Unarmed Strike, Arcane Strike and so forth and use your spells to make you as Monk-y as you want to be...and probably more broken- and Wu-Shu- than the PHB Monk.

(The Martial Arcanist link in my sig will help you find what you want...)

You could even do things like use a spear- a favored weapon in classic kung-fu movies. But since the BttlSorc gets a free Martial weapon proficiency, you could go for a Halberd or other polearm (also popular in those films). Heck, maybe your DM would be so kind as to let you give up that Martial Weapon proficiency in exchange for the overpowered Improved Unarmed Strike (which, sans Monk "treat as natural or manufactured weapon" language, should weigh in your favor). Reflavor your Magic Missile to look like throwing stars...

"HwaaaaaaChaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

When your spell-slinging combo of Raiden and Golden Fist- wearing armor- goes nuts, maybe he'll reconsider.

@Dannyalcatraz
That'd be an option if the DM wasn't so paranoid as restrict everything but the PHB.

Seriously though, even a fighter can probably outshine a Monk in core with the right feats and gear. Probably unenchanted crap too.

The only thing a fighter wouldn't have is the saves. Whoopee?

I think the worst thing he'll get me on is my saves. My saves at first level are 4, 4, 6 i think. The further we go, the better they'll be, especially after multiclassing.

Then he should ban Charisma Paladins when they get their Divine Grace too, just because of their saves? (which in my personal opinion makes their saves better then Monks.)

It's pretty silly to ban them over just saves when they only really contribute to you NOT getting owned. Not really so much as to the Monk owning others with them.

PHB only?

Sorcerer, Cha/Dex/Whatever, full (light) armor + Still spell. If he's human, take another feat and get him a weapon of your choice.

Sure, you won't be able to still your 1st level spells at 1st level, but that ASF isn't that severe. I ran a 1st level human Sorcerer in Scale Mail and NO Still Spell and only lost one spell to ASF. (Yes, I used stuff from non-PHB sources, but none of that affected his spell failure chances.)

Or, as I'm sure someone will point out, simply play a Paladin or Cleric and call him a monk. Wear (light) armor, use IUC and kick ass. No ASF, you'll be able to buff yourself into ridiculousness, and you'll be at least as effective as a Monk...until you're more effective.

Dar lord. If you look at the character sheet I linked to earlier, you'll notice my monk's unarmed strike attacks at +11/+6 for 2d6+4 damage per hit, 11 on average.

His +2 quarterstaff attacks at +13/+8 for 1d6+8 damage... which is 11.5 on average.

... screw unarmed strikes.

I should play a pally just to f*** up the rp aspects of the group. But I'm not that big of a douche.

Honestly, this DM is just weird when it comes to the mechanics side of stuff. I could give him a completely unoptimized character and he would just take it and say, "well don't break anything." and then give a crazy stupid armor/weapon to the barbarian and say it's balanced. Once he had to have an ac so high none of us could hit it except for the fighter because the fighter (who wasn't me) was broke beyond compare becuase of him.
