Help me create a 'cowboy' :)

Hi there!

In preparation of our RttToEE campaign we will play a small adventure for about 4 sessions with new level 1 character. To my surprise, I found myself wanting to play a real "cowbow". Not literally, but one of those crazy bastards who does crazy stuff just for the jiggles, as wrestling lions, climbing mountains and running over a 4 inch wide treebrige over a vulcan, that sort of things.

Thing Crocodile Dundee, or a regular Simpsons Aussie parody :)

Here's what I've come up with this far:

Random notes:

Phredric "Dick" McGregor
Human Rogue 1

Region: Sembia

Stats (32pt point buy)
Str 14 6
Dex 16 10
Con 14 6
Int 12 4
Wis 10 2
Cha 12 4

Skills (8+1+1 *4 = 40):
Balance 4
Climb 4
Escape Artist 2
Hide 4
Jump 4
Listen 2
Move Silently 4
Spot 4
Swim 4
Tumble 4
Use Rope 4

Feats (1+1):
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Whip)
Martial Weapon Proficiency (Knife)

Saving Thorows:
Fort 0 2 - 2
Refl 2 3 - 5
Will 0 0 - 0

Combat:
Melee 0 2 - 2
Range 0 3 - 3

Languages:
Common
Chondathan
Mulhorandi

A "knife" is technically a slashing shortsword, that is one of those big rambo thingies, if you know what I mean :)

Aything I can add, change or remove?

Thanks!

I'd consider some ranks in Handle Animal, for the lion-wrestling :)

Mick Dundee (or Steve Irwin) - even if they don't teach any tricks to animals - would certainly have Handle Animal ranks...

Well... He is *not* so good at handling animals in a nice and friendly fashion, to tell the truth :)

Great character concept! Sounds like he'll be a blast to play.

A couple ideas:
1) Rogues are already proficient in the short sword. Looks like you have an extra feat to play around with.
2) You can't take exotic weapon proficiency until your BAB is +1 or higher. D'oh! Looks like you have two extra feats to play around with.
3) If you want to handle animals nicely and kindly, get animal empathy. If you don't care about being all St. Francis, go with handle animal. I think a couple ranks in it would be appropriate -- and your DM may let you base the skill off of strength, if you describe what you're doing in Crocodile Hunter terms.
4) Personally, I think your wisdom is too high. Why not go with an 8 wisdom? Put those extra points into Con or Str, and plan on raising that stat at 4th level.
5) For your extra feats, consider run, point blank shot, combat reflexes, alertness, dodge, and iron will. Run is probably the least useful one in the bunch, but if you're wrestling lions, I could be wrong ;)

Good luck!
Daniel

This character concept is one of the few where it actually makes a lot of sense to give him levels as a Ranger. You would want the Wilderness Lore and Handle Animals skills. The Track feat would also be very appropriate.

If you see this character as an outdoorsy type, you might want to think about asking to use the apprentice level rules from the DMG. That would allow you to multiclass at first level.

The other option would be to check if the GM has some sort of woodsman feat that would allow you to take Wilderness Lore as a class skill.

In any case, hope you have fun with the character.

Good ideas everyone! I love them all! :)

Just a note:

"1) Rogues are already proficient in the short sword. Looks like you have an extra feat to play around with. "

A regular short sword is a pirecing weapon. My "knife" is a slashing weapon, with the same statistics as a short sword.

Since Rogues are proficient with all daggers and with short sword, it is still questionable if you need to buy proficiency with the weapon.

The jury is still out on if the Kukri counts as a dagger. If your GM decides that rogues are proficient with them, you might take that instead.

Otherwise the closest weapon would be the scimitar.

The other thing to keep in mind is that if you intend to multiclass the character, you should probably wait a level before taking your trademark weapon. Barbarians and Rangers get proficiency with all simple and martial weapons.

Good idea bret fellow! I might better wait one level and save myself 2 feats. With my fighter bonusfeat I can also take the Whip feat :)

My Greyhawk cowboy character is somewhat different from what you're going for; he's a Wil Rogers type Bard (free whip proficiency) singing the cows to sleep at night--a Baklunish Paynim tribesman with maxed Skills in Profession(herdsman) and Ride.

His main goal is increasing his herd size. Finding gold to do so is his main motivation for adventure, and finding exotic, valuable herd animals is his motivation for traveling outside the Paynims.

His favorite weapon is the longhorn stampede--1d12 for every 5 longhorns in the stampede.(as per Monster Manual/Animal/Bison) Remember in the Jungle Book how Mogli killed his nemesis by stampeding his herd into the gully where Shere Kahn was trapped.

I'm snagging your character; he could make a good ally or even maybe a future cohort. Thanks and have fun with him.
