Help me create a more wicked Book of Vile Darkness artifact

Why not also have it be the manifestos and apolgetics for the most evil and well known indivduals like Hitler, Stalin, Jeffry Dahmer, and Charles Manson (or your campaign's equivlent).

The book contains hundreds of stories of good people being corrupted and turning to evil. All the stories start the same way, with some sign or portent falling over the land.

The owner doesn't just read the book, they write it. Evil tales written into the book come true. Make it a long ritual using special blood inks, blah blah blah. After the NPC steals the book, the portent appears.

To destroy the book, the PCs need to stop the ritual before it finishes, and write a different ending in which the book is destroyed.

Evil book ideas

The book might animate any creature killed in a 50' radius of its possessor. The animation might take a week but after that the creature is unraisable and denied eternal rest. The animated creatures serve the will of the book or a malevolent power but the denied spirits are on the concience of the characters.

The book might heal the characters to maximum +1 hp if it is allowed by the player. The Hp might dissapear forever (no healing allowed) if the book is distroyed or if another takes it. If the characters receive 36 healings (6 times 6) then they become wraiths. Characters seperate from the book begin to rot until they have permanently lost all the HP 'healed' by the book.

The book bears the name of everyone who has ever possessed it. The true name - a name used to summon and control.

Those who do not share the books alignment can not heal or sleep in its presence.

The bearer of the book can only sleep or rest with the aid of a gentle repose spell.

As it aids the reader it harms the readers closest love\co-players.

Characters who accept the bonuses of the book discover a dark side to themselves. Any reincarnation, or ressurection switches personalities to the malific alter ego.

Any of those peak your interest ??

i like the "always center of unhallow"/no good spells (cleric/etc.) within 30' thing. and it would definitely increase the frequency of powerful wandering evil ("we want it now!") and good ("what are you doing with 'that'?") encounters. even other adventurers of all alignments would be drawn to it, for whatever reasons.

Merge!!

Perhaps the book contains a powerful ritual, one that can have as many components as you like but the end result is that the Material Plane and either The Nine Hells or the Abyss (your choice) become one plane - a literal hell on earth. Perhaps the ritual also gives the possessor all sorts of evil power (like templates or what have you) so that when the two planes become one the possessor is ensured enough strength to survive the resulting chaos, maybe even it ensures they are the strongest so that they can rule this new combined plane.

As for powers for just holding it, I would make it exude a constant unhallow (probably at an extended range and the holder can switch the extra benefit of the spell at will. I would also say that it exudes an extended distort summons (from the Book of Vile Darkness). Lastly, given the nature of the ritual, I would say that any evil, extraplanar creature within a certain distance of the book loses its extraplanar status and can no longer be banished or dismissed etc. (Of course the downside to this is that if such a creature dies it would actually die and not just be returned to its homeplane)

Just a thought,

The book is only one volume of a series of dark prophesies. When combined with the other 6 volumes (which the NPC or other BBEG has accrued), they show the path to become a deity. Unfortunately, using the books will cause untold destruction as the very fabric of creation is torn asunder and remade...

The books are as follows:

The book of Deth
The book of Tyme
The book of Phaite
The book of Worr
The book of Naicher
The book of Eeffyl (the one the BBEG wants)
The book of Aull

Do you have access to Bastion Press' Arms and Armor? If not folks here can help you wing it:

The book provides a level progression for intelligent items. Reason for destroying it: It's your campaigns BBEG!! As it grows in power, it takes over its various 'owners' (increased Ego score). Don't let them in on it until the right moment. Imagine th looks on their faces when they realize that all of those evil wizards they killed were actually controlled by the book! Cliche, but still effective if timed right.

After that, let it slip that when it reaches 21 level, something bad happens (It becomes an avatar of evil, it opens a gate to all of the levels of the Abyss at once, etc). They have to truely destroy it before that happens.

General progression:

Level 1: Two attributes at 2d6+5, one attribute at 3d6, semi empathic, one primary ability
Level 2: +1 to both primary attributes
Level 3: Empathy
Level 4: One additional primary ability
Level 5: +1 to both primary Attributes
Level 6: Speech
Level 7: One additional Primary ability
Level 8: +1 to both primary attributes
Level 9: Ability to Read spoken languanges
Level 10: +1 to primary attributes
Level 11: Telepathy
Level 12: +1 to secondary attribute
Level 13: One Extraordinary power
Level 14: +1 to primary attributes
Level 15: Ability to read magic
Level 16: One additional extraordinary power
Level 17: +1 to primary attributes
Level 18: One additional Primary ability
Level 19: One Special purpose
Level 20: +1 to primary attributes

Also, the items gain the same exp as their owner. They don't 'take a share'. You won't have to explain why they're getting less exp, although that could make or an interesting mechanic by itself.

666 copies of the book are available right now for only 1 copper piece when you join "The Book of Vile Darkness Club". Then once a month a random undead will appear where ever you reside to give you our catalogue and steal your soul!
