Help me figure out what I bought

I was in a thrift store today and saw some old DnD stuff. I put together a crate of stuff and paid $30 for it. The condition of the stuff ranges from good to used, but I think it was definitely worth the price.

Unfortunately, I didn't start playing until 3rd edition, so I have no idea what I bought or for what edition it's for.

Can you guys help me sort my haul?

Wow! All that for $30??? Amazing.

They look to be in poor shape but still readable, so definitely worth $30.

Looks like most of them are adventure modules... You've got stuff ranging from OD&D, Basic Set, 1e, and 2e... I recommend looking them up here:
The Acaeum

And cue the grognards to tell you what you really have ;) Mine is more a post of jealousy haha

You have some nice adventures there, download a retroclone ruleset (I think OSRIC is the AD&D clone) get a group and hit it old school style.

It looks like you snagged more than half the items on this "Best of D&D list". You lucky duck, I'm ridiculously jealous. I'm always buying these things on ebay so I have a pretty good idea what they're worth.

GROGNARDIA: 30 Greatest D&D Adventures of All Time

At a glance If they were in good condition they'd be worth $800. I wouldn't hesitate to pay $200 for what you just got. But I'm not really sure what they're worth. The Temple of Elemental Evil and Deserts of Desolation trilogy aren't cheap now.

The vast majority of those are AD&D 1E (Or basic/expert set, as far as I can tell they're compatible). A few are for AD&D 2E - these have newer logos and tend to be larger volumes. I personally haven't had much trouble going between 1E, BECMI, and 2E modules. All of these games have the same underlying math (the numbers became inflated with 3E/4E with feats and other changes). So if you find a retroclone game (I'd try Castles and Crusades) you should be able to play all of them. Or you can jump swap out the monsters with 3E/PF ones. I wouldn't recommend 4E because the amount of throwaway battles and the spatial layout of the dungeons (narrow hallways) aren't really compatible with 4E. Running Keep on the Borderlands would take forever...

BTW - I started with 2E in 1998 and barely remember how to play that game. After a lot of 3E and 4E I switched to AD&D retroclones. I'm not going back. We both missed out the first time but these are legitimately a ton of fun. It's sort of like when an artist puts out their first couple albums and they're young and wildly inventive and not afraid to try crazy things and possibly fail (see Dungeonland - it doesn't always work but it's mad fun). After a while they know what does and doesn't work and they start refining their old ideas. But generally they really got the essence of what they were trying to do the first time. It's sort of like comparing the Beatles White Album to the stuff Paul McCartney's been doing lately.

Good find! Is_907 is right on the link. Check the The Acaeum for info and past top prices and also do a title search on ebay just to see what people are asking for them these days as a buy it now price at various conditions. Also, we should ping grodog and see what he has to say. If nothing else, he'll like hearing about someone getting a bargain.

The Ravenloft and Myth Drannor boxsets may be mixed together a bit. I'll be taking pictures of the various pieces to try identify what goes where.

I have something else I can't identify that is a bunch of individual pages. Looks fairly recent print wise (90s?), and is 3-hole punched. I'll be taking pictures of that too to figure out what it is.

The acaeum even has a collecting appraisal subforum: The Acaeum Forums

So post the pics there and let the guru's weighh the worth.

I think there's much that won't be worth much ($2-7) for reselling, but some a bit more ($8-12) a few even more ($13-20, e.g. TOEE supermodule, Greyhawk Ruins). No $ 100 rares among the lot afais though.

My advice: keep them and play them!
