Help me find a campaign world, please!

Felon

First Post
My PC's have just reached 4th level, and I need to expand my campaign so that they actually have a world where they can learn the names of places and personages.

I have the Forgotten Realms sourcebook, but the general sentiment in my group is that it's a world where everything's been staked out by high-powered heroes and villains, kinda like joining the cast of DragonBall Z after Goku's gone Super Sayan III.

I need something fresh. And what's more, I need something friendly to player-characters. Has anyone published a campaign setting that actually has a primer for the players to use? Just something they can read to know what the major cities are and who the major players are?

Okay, then what type of setting are you looking for? Some campaign worlds like Midnight, can't be just sprung on that easily in the midst of a campaign. Others like Greyhawk can be.

I'll recommend a nice pdf that is good, and I doubt anyone else will mention: Next Age Heroes. It has everything you need to start journeying outward. In the pdf is says the highest level NPCs are 7th level and they are few. Its a world ready for the new heroes to make a name forthemselves. Here's a link to the product on the REview Database:

THere are many setting out there, I'm just trying to point out a good one that few know about. The others will cover the more well known ones. :D

"World of Whitethorn 1B: The Village of Oester" is being released in stores next week or so and it is designed for character levels 3-5 and beyond. It is very story and character-oriented and highly detailed.

The World of Whitethorn is a brand new, build-as-you-go campaign setting. It is not oppressive or over-the-top-weird.

Free player's handout here:

I wouldn't recommend anything longer than a couple of pages for players to read before the game starts. Get them interested in your actual game first, not a lengthy handout.

Pitch over.

Damn, sometimes I wish I'd published a campaign setting. I get to shamelessly plug books in almost every other subject, but not campaigns. Then again, I like weird, so if I ever came up with a campaign setting, it probably wouldn't help Felon in his current predicament.

The campaign I'm running right now makes heavy use of monster classes from Savage Species, so I think it's safe to say that it's going to get a little weird. It's pretty much vanilla D&D in terms of power levels.

I guess I just really want something that the players will find accessible. They need something they can digest easily. That's why I stressed the desire for some sort of primer. I certainly appreciate the suggestions I've heard so far. I'll go check'em out!

See if you can pick up either the Living Greyhawk book, or the D&D Gazeteer. That'd give you enough places and people, without changing the gods, spell names or anything else.
