Who gets the credit...

...for naming them, I mean?

Archemaignites or ArchemaigKnights
Gnomen

(You could even use both!)

Archemaignites would probably get mispelled "Archa-May-Knights", supposedly derived from "Arcane Knights of Mayhem", eventually.

The "Allies" could still call them Panzergheist.

Commoners would probably call them "Metal-men", or something equally simple. The more educated/Nobles would probably call them "Automatons".

Personally, I'd stay away from "Mecha", including Mechanoids, Mechazoids, etc., etc., ad nauseum... but that's just me.

In my Homebrew dwarves and gnomes are the two subraces of the Dwemer (with thanks to the Elder Scrolls series). The Dwemer created the 'forged during the Age of Wonder some several thousand years ago... and thus they're known to the world as the Dwerforged.

Kriemiede(te) or Kriedete: German translation Kieg --> War, schmiedete --> Forged

or

Soulforged
Doesn't sound like a German would actually combine the two words. (Though that's not really the point)
In remembrance of the Bundeswehr "slang", it might be:
Kriegsgeschmiedeter (KriGesch) (from the direct translation of Warforged)
Kleinstpanzer (KleiPa)
Kampfanzug, autark (autKa)
Gefechtsanzug, autark (autGe)
Soldat, konstruiert (konSol)

Panzergeist doesn't sound, bad, either. :)
