Picture a knife in your mind. There's a handle, and there's a blade. And then there's that thing between the two. A part of the handle perpendicular to the blade and the rest of the handle. That part that keeps your hand from accidentally sliding up over the handle and onto the blade when you stab someone.

What is that thing called? For the life of me, I can't remember.

You mean the fancy name for the guard?

It's called a guard, is it not?

Mainly used for not jsut keeping your hand off, but being able to block other blades with the dagger as well.
