help me get rid of ECL

I am working on a pc race that has wings, but I don't want to the race to suffer from an ECL. How would you recommend wings for a race while keeping it balanced with other races?

Only short bursts of flight at a time, only with no armor, etc. Any ideas would be appreciated

Really, there isn't any way of doing a winged pc race without ecl. That's at least a +1 level adjustment. So, you can go the route of Unearthed Arcana and give the players the chance of reducing their ECL. In the long run it's pretty fair.

Now you might be able to pull it off by saying that they have hollow bones and have a -2 strength and -2 constitution because of it. But the ECL reduction method is the best way to go.

I'm thinking of just giving it 10 feet flight (poor), I wouldn't really see that adding too much to the race.

Does anyone know where I can find a good ECL calculator?

Hmm. Make it sorta like the gelfling from the dark crystal.
Yes, they have wings, but they are more like butterfly wings rather than the normal feathery wings. This gives the character the permanent feather fall ability, but little else. And in order to balance this out, -1 constitution, -1 strength.

And you could create some feats that would give them better and better flight abilities as they progress.

This is a pretty good ECL calculator. But it's important that you only use this as part of the factor in determining the monsters ECL. Use DM's (or GM's) descretion.
