Help me identify an old D&D edition

I'm trying to re- obtain stuff I once owned, and one of those things is an old D&D edition. My memory of early editions isn't as good as many others' is, so hopefully somebody can help identify it. I remember the BECMI editions fairly clearly and I'm pretty sure this wasn't one of them.

Problem is I recall very little. Pretty much all I recall is that if it came in a box, I don't remember that -- it was a black and white book whose covers were paper (same as the pages). And that's about all I remember.

Maybe some suggested details might trigger a long lost memory!

So which early edition of D&D might I be thinking of? Any ideas?

VERY good physical descriptions of pretty much every version of the game (the page I linked to is for original D&D, which sounds kind of like what you describe.

I'm pretty sure it's not that. One book, no box. I did own a white box at one point, but this was something else, I'm sure.

Sure it is not just a copy of the Holmes D&D Basic Set it had a very light blue cover (and a blue box)?

Sounds like it could be the first two printings of Holmes for the UK - apparently released alone, without a box, and the cover looks black & white from the pics.

Those covers were actually very dark blue. But that's close; I was wondering if Mr M might have been thinking about one of them.

My first thoughts were that it was the UK Games Workshop 'black' printing. I have never seen one but one did come up on eBay once.

on a similar theme...does anybody remember some character sheets that came in a pad, probably UK only...that were sort of black, grey/silver and had square boxes for the main stats?

I think you are thinking of the GW sheets published in pads (they made 'em for AD&D, Traveller and Runequest, maybe others) throughout the eighties. In fact, I just googled "Advanced Dungeons Dragons Character Sheet Games Workshop" and discovered retro-style sheets so similar, I thought they were the real deal.

Any art description would help narrow it down as well.
