Help me make a character for a new 3.5 campaign

Elodan

Adventurer
Our regular DM needs a break so our alternate DM is starting a new 3.5 campaign set in pre-war Dyvers. I'm excited about the campaign but can't really figure out what race and class I want to play so I'm looking for ideas. We're only using the core books.

Currently, the party consists of a elven wizard and human barbarian, the rest of us haven't made up our minds. I usually play fighter types or arcane spellcasters. I'm up for trying anything with the exception of the cleric or druid classes.

Thanks.

Are you going to have a city based adventure, or is the base of operations just in Dyvers?

I was going to suggest cleric, but you have nixed that idea, so, let's see. Rogue seems the obvious choice, though you like fighters and spell casters.

So somehow you need to come up with a fighter/wizard. Of course you know multiclasses spell slingers aren't as good as straight spell slingers, so you have to mitigate that weakness.

How about a dwarven fighter/bard? Being a dwarf you get fighter as favored class and then being bard you get access to some spells, (though the 3.5 core spell list for bards is lacking in my opinion). And if you keep the levels relatively even you'll have good saves in all 3 categories.

Why not a cleric out of curiousity? I have yet to make a clerical character myself, but the next one I do make is going to be one. I have this really cool concept I want to do. She will be Nuetral and have the Healing and Death domains. She will turn undead and have cure spells as her spontaneous ones. But she will memorize plenty of inflict spells and use them. I just think this idea is awesome. He fingers will be something to fear. You won't want her touching you unless you knew for sure what she was going to do.

And I really like the Druid as a class also (but have yet to play one). The ability to spontaneously cast Summon Nature's Ally is awesome. Give her a few rounds in combat and she will have an army of creatures fighting for her. And once she can change into animals, it will be fun. And the crowning point of a druid is as soon as she can cast Shapechange.

I am just curious why you don't want to play them, or give them a try? I used to not want to play them, but now I want to and haven't had a chance yet.

Well, you could always complement the Wizard's versatility with a Sorceror. Just sling spells around with abandon while they decide if the situation merits them using one up :)

Or, since Barb and Wizard are taken, but you like fighting: Dwarven Fighter/ Rogue or Dwarven Ranger/Rogue.

You can either go TWF, or up the spiked chain route. You'll have the HP to take quite a bit of damage, and with Sneak Attack, you'll be able to dish it out.

For Fig/Rog: Improved Trip + Sneak Attack is ugly against most any biped you run into, especially if you get someone to Enlarge you. With a decent Int (which you'll need for Combat Expertise anyway) you'll also have the Skill Points left to fill most of the Rogue niche.

Or, of course with TWF you can just deal out a pile of hits, and your Favored Enemy bonuses will help too. And you can blow the Rogue SP on their class skills, and use the Ranger SP for sneaking.

How big is the party?

Do you want a straight or an out there character?

For something out there try a monster manual race, straight orc, kobold, or aranea, for instance.

You have plenty of class choices left and a few group niches left to fill, if you want party effectiveness go for filling a niche, either a sneaky scout (ranger or rogue) a face man (rogue or bard) or a healer (bard, paladin, ranger if you get a cure light wound wand). If there are only three of you I'd suggest a healer (any of the classes I listed also fit a second niche as well).

If you have a large party then you might want to try something different you have not before, maybe a dwarven monk, they catch up on speed at higher levels, do not suffer as small sized, and monks can use the high con.

Dyvers is going to be the base of operations. Our adventures will most likely take place in the wild or in dungeons but I expect to have a couple of city based adventures thrown in.

I've tried the cleric a few times and it just isn't my cup of tea. The DM is reworking the druid class (should see the new one this week). I've never been enticed by the druid class but I could be persuaded to give it a try.

The party is going to be 4 - 6 characters with a steady 4 and 2 others who will pop in occassionally. I'm looking for a straight character. Class and race from the PHB. I have no problems with either a multiclass or straight class character.

I like the ideas I've been given so far and am open to more.
