Help me make a chef

Hey, I played this same character! His name was Groodle, and he was a halfling psionicist (2e). He'd use his powers to stun wild game, knock 'em over the head with a frying pan, and drag 'em back to the kitchen. His schtick was offering party members ridiculously unlikely hors d'ouevres at every opportunity. "Illithid puffs? Made with creme d'owlbear!"

He was fun. :D
 

Bard is still a valid option. If you have ever watched a cooking competition, you'll notice that for the extrodinary cheffs there is an delicate "dance" to cooking and preparing the food. I am not sure what you would name this, but the skill required to would fall nicely into the Preform category. While, Bardic Music might require a Preform check, there is no reason you can't use it for other things as well. With Oratory, you could use the Bardic Music as well as to develope "ballads" on how ignorant and foolish all those around you are. Combining Preform (Oratory) and Bardic Knowledge will provide your character a nearly infinate number of insults and snide remarks to outlast his lifetime.
Also, you might consider becoming a teacher of such arts. With Leadership, you could virtually open your own school.
 

I'm playing a ranger right now who considers himself a skilled chef. IMO, you need Profession (Cooking), Kn (Nature), and Survival (for butchering and gathering ingredients) to do a decent job actually making the food. Perform (Cooking) is all about the flair, sort of like you get at fancy Japanese steakhouses, where they do tricks and entertain you as they cook.

For my character, it's mostly a sideline and flavor thing. I also recall playing a one-shot where I was a cook for a guild of thieves. Besides Profession (Cook), that character's most important skill - and problem-solving method - was Craft (Poison).

Hmm...you're stretching my brain a bit, but I forgive you and I'll see what I can remember:

Prerequisites:
Feat - Skill Focus: Cooking
Skills - Craft: Cooking 12 ranks, Survival 6 ranks, Knowlege (Nature) 6 ranks

I think that those were the prerequisites...I'll check when I get home tomorrow.
 

So... my thoughts. The classes I have so far been considering (before this thread):

Beguiler - possibly the strongest contender at present. Good skill points. The character's magic can supplement and enhance his cooking by improving presentation and such (he'd have a quirk about never using his magic to enhance his food directly). Also, I suspect/fear there won't be an arcane caster in the group unless I make one.

Cleric - this would probably be the stronger contender if there weren't a Druid in the group already.

Ranger - This would work really well, but I worry that there would be too much overlap with the Scout.

Rogue - This could work, but it isn't too inspiring.

Soulknife - suboptimal skill list for the concept, but the idea of a pair of glowing chef's knives appearing suddenly is appealing.

The class also has an ability (at third level, if I recall correctly) called, Get Out Of The Kitchen, in which the Master Chef threatens every square of his kitchen. Very situational, but simply AWESOME when it comes up...
